Holme Valley Heritage Week 2026

A Special Hands-On Experience for Young People!

What was life at home like before washing machines, digital cameras and laptops?
Bring the kids along for a fun, hands-on journey into the past during Holme Valley Heritage Week.

Young visitors can delve into special Memory Baskets filled with objects once used around the home, discover how everyday jobs were done in the past and compare them with the things we use today. There’s even a Victorian laptop to discover!

Children are encouraged to bring along something from home today to compare with objects from years gone by and each session has something different to explore.

Holme Valley Heritage Week 2026

Discover the History of The Civic

How much do you know about the story behind one of Holmfirth’s best-known community buildings?

Throughout Heritage Week, The Civic, Holmfirth is opening up its archives with an exhibition exploring the fascinating history of the Civic Hall and Drill Hall, the two buildings that together make up The Civic we know today.

Discover stories from their past, browse historic photographs and learn more about the changing role these buildings have played in the life of Holmfirth and its community over the years.

The exhibition will be on display in the Reception Room on selected days throughout Holme Valley Heritage Week.

14 September: 2 - 4pm
15, 17 & 19 September: 10am - 12 noon
16 & 18 September: 10am - 4pm

Friday 18th September will also include a fundraising coffee morning for Royal Voluntary Service Holme Valley.

Step Inside a Hidden Piece of Holme Valley History

Tucked away in Wooldale is a building with more than 300 years of history - and during Heritage Week, you’ll have a rare opportunity to step inside.

The historic Friends Meeting House is one of the Holme Valley’s oldest Quaker meeting houses and has played an important role in the local community for generations.

Come along and explore this peaceful and fascinating building, learn more about its history and discover the stories of the people who have gathered here over the centuries.

A real hidden gem of the Holme Valley and a wonderful opportunity to visit a building you may have passed many times without knowing the history behind its doors.

The butterflies have landed in Holmfirth! 🦋

Summer might be almost over, but there’s still a little bit of August colour to enjoy in the Old Cobblers Shop.

Artist April Key has created a beautiful new installation inspired by some of her favourite butterfly species spotted during the hot August weather 🌀🦋

This is the latest in April’s series of free installations at the Old Cobblers Shop, which have brought colour, creativity and something new to discover in the centre of Holmfirth over the last few months helping to keep the village looking amazing for locals and visitors alike.

Take a look next time you’re in Holmfirth, the butterflies are currently on display and are all available to purchase.

Another lovely splash of creativity in the heart of the village. 💛

Holme Valley Heritage Week 2026

Exploring House Histories 🏡

Have you ever wondered who lived in your house before you, when it was built or how it has changed over the years?

Join Maureen Wheeler from Huddersfield & District Family History Society at Holmfirth Library for a fascinating introduction to researching the history of houses and the people who called them home.

The Society has completed more than 40 house histories, many here in the Holme Valley, and Maureen will use local case studies to show just how much can be discovered.

Learn how to uncover a property's construction, ownership, occupants and alterations, using sources including historic maps, Tithe Records, the Enclosure Act, old Ordnance Survey plans, newspaper archives and records held by local libraries and West Yorkshire Archives.

You’ll also be able to pick up a Research Record booklet and helpful hints sheet, giving you the tools to start investigating a building for yourself.

Sharing Memories of Home

Some of the best history isn’t found in books - it’s found in people’s memories.

Senior citizens are warmly invited to join us at Holmfirth Library for a relaxed and welcoming afternoon of conversation, memories and shared stories.

What was it like growing up in the Holme Valley? Where did you work? How has the area changed? What people, places and everyday moments do you remember most?

Sharing Memories of Home is an opportunity to reminisce, listen to others and celebrate the experiences, friendships and everyday moments that together make up the story of our community.

You don’t need to prepare anything, simply come along, join the conversation and share as much or as little as you like. Everyone has a story worth sharing.

Holme Valley Heritage Week 2026

Our Place, Our Stories at The Tech

Step inside one of Holmfirth’s historic buildings and discover how its story has continued to evolve for more than 130 years.

Built in 1894, Holmfirth’s Grade II listed Technical Institute once played an important role in supporting local industry and education. Today, Holmfirth Tech has been reimagined as a community-owned space for arts, learning, wellbeing and enterprise.

Explore Our Place, Our Stories at The Tech through displays and informal activities bringing different chapters of the building’s history to life. Browse photographs and exhibition panels, share your own memories and discover how the community came together to preserve The Tech and give it a new purpose from 2018 onwards.

There’ll also be a dedicated display exploring the historic Graveship of Holme, while friendly volunteers will be on hand to share stories, answer questions and tell you more about The Tech today.

Suitable for all ages, it’s a relaxed opportunity to explore local history, share memories and experience a unique heritage building at the heart of Holmfirth.

How well do you know the history of the place you call home?

Visit Holmfirth Tech during Heritage Week and discover the story of the Graveship of Holme and its seven historic townships.

Through a collection of historic and contemporary photographs, the exhibition offers a fascinating look at the area, its communities and how the Holme Valley has changed over time.

Compare familiar places past and present, discover more about the historic communities that make up the Graveship, and see the landscape we know today through a different lens.

Holme Valley Heritage Week 2026

Cottage Weaving Family Afternoon 🧶

Step back in time and discover the fascinating world of traditional cottage weaving with a family-friendly afternoon of demonstrations, activities and local history at St David’s Church, Holmbridge.

Meet skilled weavers Ruth and Anita, who continue this ancient craft today, and watch live demonstrations of tabletop loom weaving and wool being spun into yarn.

Have a go at paper weaving, try peg loom weaving with Lucy, and learn about her flock of Woodland sheep and the yarn she produces from their fleeces.

You can also explore displays telling the story of cottage weaving in the Holme Valley and follow the Craftsmen and Craftswomen of St David’s self-guided trail.

St David’s will also have a special Memory Board, where you’re invited to share memories of people and special times connected with the church. If you have any photographs you’re happy to share, please bring them along.

With activities for all ages and refreshments available, it’s a lovely opportunity for the whole family to experience some of the skills, stories and traditions that form part of our local heritage.
