What is a "gourmand" candle scent?

Gourmand scents smell good enough to eat: think vanilla, coffee, chocolate, caramel and mocha. They're warm, sweet and comforting, which is why they're so popular in autumn and winter.

Tip: gourmand scents are perfect for kitchens and living rooms, where they make a home feel instantly cosy.

Are you a sweet scent person or a fresh scent person?

Why is my candle smoking?

Nine times out of ten, the wick is too long. Before every burn, trim the wick to about 5mm (a quarter of an inch) once the wax has cooled.

A trimmed wick gives you:
• A steady, even flame
• Less black soot on the jar
• A longer-lasting candle

Also keep candles away from draughts, which make the flame flicker and smoke.

Not sure which candle scent to choose? Start with the scent families.

• Fresh: clean and airy, like white musk or peppermint
• Floral: soft and pretty, like rose, jasmine or lavender
• Woody: warm and grounding, like sandalwood or oud
• Sweet: cosy and comforting, like vanilla or coffee

Most people have a favourite family. Pick from that and you'll rarely go wrong.

Which family are you? Tell us below.

Candle tip: the first burn matters most.

Soy wax has a "memory". The first time you light a new candle, let it burn until the melted wax reaches the edge of the jar. That usually takes around 1 hour for every inch of the jar's width, so 2 to 3 hours for most jars.

Blow it out too early and the candle will keep burning down the same narrow hole (called tunnelling), wasting wax and scent.

Save this post for your next new candle.

Soy wax vs paraffin wax: what's the difference?

Paraffin wax is made from petroleum. Soy wax is made from soybeans, a renewable, plant-based crop.

Why we pour every Worthy Click candle in soy wax:
• It's plant-based and renewable
• It generally burns at a lower temperature, so candles tend to last longer
• It holds fragrance well, for a lovely scent throw
• Spills clean up easily with warm soapy water
