I heard the news today, oh boy....
Just found out that another one has gone and far, far too young.
Ian Bairnson was born in Lerwick, in Shetland and lived in Levenswick before his family moved to Edinburgh when he was about nine.
But who was he, you ask? Well, for those of you familiar with The Alan Parsons Project, Bairnson was responsible for so many of those tasteful, yet perfect guitar solos that absolutely made the song.
Before that, he was a session musician before forming Pilot with a Fresh bassist and a high roller of the Bay City kind.
Never heard of them? You have. They had a big hit with Magic from their first album (produced by Alan Parsons).
Anyway, Bairnson moved on from that to APP, worked with 10cc, oh and you may have heard some of his stuff when working with some girl called Kate Bush. Heard of her? He played on The Kick Inside, Lionheart, Never for Ever and The Dreaming.
Those two fantastic guitar solos on Wuthering Heights are his work, by the way.
Bairnson ran a studio in Spain for a decade until 2013, then returned to the UK to work as a session guitarist. But his career was cut short by a degenerative neurological disorder that resulted in dementia. He died on 7 April 2023, aged just 69.
It's hard for me to pick a favourite. I love the funky I Wouldn't Want to Be Like You from I Robot, Prime Time from Ammonia Avenue, or The Games People Play on The Turn of a Friendly Card.
He was an understated guitarist, but always had the right line at the right time.
I would love to have heard the master from the recording of his solo on Silence and I, as it is only just getting going as it is faded out.
I guess I'll pick the solo from Eye in the Sky, which is not only a fantastic song, but great album.
Requiescat in pacem Iain Bairnson.
