To keep your braking at its best, one thing you can do is sand the faces of the brake blocks to clean them and wipe down the braking surfaces of your wheels regularly. The chunks of metal embedded in the rubber can be removed with a metal pick.

It's amazing the difference a bit of TLC makes sometimes!
