New stock now at Hemswell Antique Centre

Harry and Arthur have been back at Hemswell today, adding several new pieces to our display following a number of recent sales.

Newly added upstairs in the Guardroom:

• Gillows of Lancaster Davenport, c.1830
• William IV rosewood occasional table
• George III mahogany chest of drawers by J. Moorcroft, c.1790, with a beautiful rich patina
• Pair of French Rococo gilt bronze figural candelabra, late 19th century

You’ll never guess where this table was made. 🌍

Made in Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka) around 1840, this remarkable centre table is crafted from ebony and calamander, two of the most prized decorative hardwoods used by the island’s nineteenth-century cabinetmakers.

Unlike the specimen-wood arrangements often found on Ceylonese tables, its top features an unusual radiating design, enriched with delicate ivory inlay and exceptionally fine silver stringing.

Despite our research, we have yet to find another recorded example with quite this pattern.

The richly carved ebony pedestal and original tilting mechanism reveal even more of the craftsmanship behind this fascinating piece.

New Arrival | Now Live

We are pleased to share this impressive large-scale British portrait by George Frederick Bird (1883–1948), dated 1929, depicting Gladwyn Richard William Turbutt and his sister Joan B. Turbutt as children at Ogston Hall, Derbyshire.

Set within the grounds of the family estate, Gladwyn is shown holding a balloon while Joan carries a basket of flowers, with the landscape of Ogston stretching beyond them.

The painting has particularly strong provenance, having remained connected to Ogston Hall and later forming part of the collection of Gladwyn Turbutt (1927–2025) — historian, collector and author of the four-volume A County History of Derbyshire, for which he received the 2000 Country Life Book of the Year award.

Bird studied at the Royal Academy Schools, won the Landseer Scholarship and exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Walker Art Gallery and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.

Signed and dated “G. F. Bird 1929”.
