New Arrival | A Desk for Kings

Just arrived ✨ an extraordinary French Louis XVI style cylinder desk, dating to 1869.

Finely veneered in kingwood, rosewood, tulipwood and bois satiné, the desk is richly decorated with intricate parquetry, finely cast ormolu mounts, a white Carrara marble top and three leather-lined writing surfaces.

Pieces of this calibre were never ordinary working furniture. Cylinder desks of this quality were created for the most affluent and sophisticated patrons of the 19th century, combining privacy, practicality and exceptional cabinetmaking in a form long associated with royal and aristocratic interiors.

The tradition of the French cylinder bureau stretches back to the great 18th-century royal commissions, including the celebrated Bureau du Roi made for Louis XV. By the 19th century, the form remained a symbol of status and refinement, and the finest examples were produced by leading Parisian workshops for important private residences and collectors.

This desk belongs firmly within that tradition. Its elaborate parquetry, ormolu, fitted interior, multiple writing surfaces, concealed inscription dated 1869 and Parisian stamped locks all point to a piece made to an exceptional standard.

More than a desk, it is a work of decorative art and a remarkable example of mid-19th-century French cabinetmaking.

Arthur takes us through one of our most remarkable recent arrivals—an exceptionally rare complete French Neoclassical office suite by Mercier Frères, dating to the Belle Époque, circa 1890–1900.

Comprising a matching pedestal desk, breakfront display cabinet, and desk chair, this extraordinary suite represents the very highest standards of French cabinetmaking. Decorated throughout with beautifully figured maple veneers, ebonised Greek key ornament, and finely cast gilt and patinated bronze mounts, it showcases the exceptional craftsmanship for which Mercier Frères became renowned.

Despite extensive research, we have been unable to locate another complete office suite by Mercier Frères, making this a remarkable surviving ensemble and a rare opportunity for collectors of the firm’s work.

As Arthur explains, this was not simply furniture created for writing, but a suite designed for conducting business at the highest level.

180 years ago, skilled cabinetmakers in what is now Sri Lanka created one of the most remarkable centre tables we’ve had the pleasure of offering.

Formerly known as Ceylon, the island was celebrated throughout the 19th century for producing some of the finest decorative hardwood furniture in the British Empire. Crafted from solid ebony and beautifully figured calamander, this exceptional table showcases the extraordinary skill of Ceylonese craftsmen.

Its radiating calamander top, enhanced with delicate ivory and silver inlay, is unlike any other example we have been able to trace. Combined with its richly carved ebony base, it represents craftsmanship of the very highest standard.

Harry takes a closer look at this remarkable survivor, exploring its history, materials, and the exceptional workmanship that makes it such a special piece.

Available online with free UK mainland delivery.
