STV News Anchor John Mackay Retires
A familiar face to viewers across Scotland, John Mackay is stepping down after a long and respected career in broadcasting. Known for his steady presence and signature introduction, “Hello, I’m John Mackay. Here is the news,” he will be greatly missed by audiences and colleagues alike.
Before becoming one of the most recognisable figures on STV News, Mackay worked as a young reporter for The Sunday Post, a publication that remains one of the UK’s biggest-selling newspapers under Dundee-based publisher DC Thomson, also known for producing The Beano.
I first met John years ago in Glasgow, before either of us had achieved any real recognition. We happened to cross paths at a bus stop on the 54 route from Penilee into the city. Even then, he showed the instincts of a natural journalist — our conversation quickly turned into what felt like an interview. Not long after, he wrote a thoughtful piece that was published as a centre spread in the paper — prime space in advertising terms, and a testament to his skill even at that early stage.
The article was about a Pipe Band trip to Sicily under the direction of P/M Willie Cochrane who’s initials (WC) would be made light of with his self deprecating response “at your convenience,” as he liked to say. There are many stories from those times, but this is, above all, about John.
Beyond journalism, Mackay has maintained a strong connection to Scotland’s cultural heritage, particularly the Highlands. The Mackay name itself carries a notable piping tradition, recalling figures such as Angus Mackay, Queen Victoria’s piper. It is perhaps no surprise that musical talent runs in the family — his son is also a fine player.
As John Mackay steps away from the newsroom, there is hope that he will now have more time to write and reflect, perhaps sharing more stories from a rich life and career.
