🚨 Food waste alert! STRATFORD Zero crew assemble! 🚨

As you may or may not know our lovely team member Matt is a Food Waste Hero for Olio, and sometimes the sheer amount he can be given to pass on is overwhelming and a huge task… 😬 He passes food on to many places such as the Fred Winter centre, food bank, churches, even out on the street. But it can be a lot for just him!

So today we are going to help him by finding homes for all these baked goods from Lidl. In the Stratford shop (only) this morning please come and help yourself from the goods pictured. 20b Rother Street next to One Stop. They all need to be saved from waste! See you soon. Charlie & Team 🌍

OAT MILK ON REFILL! We'd love to get more of you trying and then buying our delicious Minor Figures Oat Milk, so for the next week (‘til 11th August) in BOTH stores you can get some for FREE to try, with any purchase over £5. After almost 3 wonderful years our Char had her last shift at Zero Store | Plastic Free Shopping in Leamington this week as she is moving away and onto an exciting new chapter.

It’s been a pleasure having Char as part of the team, and she will be sadly missed by us all! Char is endlessly organised and fiercely creative, and I’m going to be a bit lost without her sorting out under the counter, mixing up the perfect blend of vegan sweets and curating beautiful shop displays!

She’s already got a job lined up an independent cinema and will begin studying a masters in a couple of months time. ❤️ Please send your well wishes in the comments, she’s already said how much she will miss you all and the shop! 😊 Thank you again Char!

I initally thought becoming more 'zero waste' would be impossible. Life is hectic, parenting can be tough (school holidays + working = 💀 ) It's cheesy to say it- but every journey starts with a single step...

If you're trying to live life with less impact on the planet, here’s what worked for me:

🫙 1: Had a sort out. Made sure I can USE UP all those toileties, cleaning products and dried foods lurking in cupboards. The kids actually enjoy helping with this as we usually find toys they've had confiscated and forgtten about. 😆 This task is a bit arduous- but costs you nothing but time!

🍶 2: Make reusables the go to. You probably already own a bottle/cup/shopping bag, but are you setting yourself up for sucess? Keep them in your bag or car, so you're less likely to forget them. (If you need a bottle or cup we stock a ton of lovely ones at www.zerostore.co.uk)

💭 3: I'm always gently questioning myself- do I really need this? Can I buy it more ethically? I recently wore through another pair of running shoes but got excellent replacements on Vinted, and saved money too. Even when buying second hand, I try not to be impulsive. I've blocked Shein/Temu and don't have an Amazon account either... removes the temptation.

🩷 4: I use other small businesses. How does this help reduce waste, you ask? Yes, things from small businesses can cost more sometimes, but I'm getting better quality for my money. I tend to get only what I need and know where it's come from, and that it's supporting my local economy. It also means I'm not bombarded by silly offers or endless app/email notifications. I can usually always use my own containers too, in many shops!

Every bottle tells a story… 📖

These bottles have been refilling with us since 2020! The smaller ones were donated to us by a kind customer who was getting juice from the local milkman, and the bottles couldn’t be returned. We passed on many of these, and every time one comes back to be refilled it reminds me of a different time.

- When we had a queue down the street
- When you couldn’t move for online orders, neatly packed in cardboard boxes awaiting collection
- When we exchanged brief chats at a distance

Nowadays the chats are longer and the customers are fewer (hellooo heatwaves 😢) but many of your containers keep coming back week after week; showing you remain dedicated to putting less in your bin and a bit extra into a small business. Did you used to refill but aren’t in the habit anymore? We’d love to see you.

Today is National Cherry Day! 🍒 This started as part of a campaign to save the British cherry. During the 20th century Britain lost 90% of its cherry orchards; partially due to cheaper international imports accounting for the majority of the fruit sold. We are proud to stock British freeze dried cherries as part of our range; which are mostly sourced as "wonky" fruit saved from waste. These are great for:

🍒 Sprinking on yoghurt with some of our Rollagranola granola.
🍒 Blending with any kind of milk for a natural milkshake (or freeze into lollies!)
🍒 Using for all kind of bakes. I had some leftover mango so added that and the cherries into a banana loaf and it was ✨️ stunning ✨️ .
🍒 Crumble on top of freshly made flapjacks for a super bougie look. 😆

Our freeze dried fruits store best in an airtight jar so don't forget to bring one. They're all also available at www.zerostore.co.uk and we'll send them in a free jar. 😊
