Yorkshire Spotlight: Flamborough Head

Flamborough Head is an outdoor lover's paradise. The coastline is a great place for birdwatchers and hikers alike. The chalk headland with sheer white cliffs is a picturesque setting for a new adventure or just a family day out.

The headland plays home to two lighthouses, with the oldest dating back to 1669. Flamborough Head is also the only chalk sea cliff in the North of England and is the nesting ground of multiple seabirds including Puffins.

On the evening of the 23rd of August 2006, a lightning bolt hit the cliffs and sent 100 tonnes of rock into the ocean.

Located in the Yorkshire Dales, Malham is a small, popular village surrounded by limestone walls. The main tourist attraction of this village is the 260ft high, amphitheater style cliff formation named Malham Cove.

Malham Cove was the backdrop for one of the scenes in the 7th Harry Potter film - the Deathly Hallows. The cove was formed thousands of years ago by a waterfall carrying water from the Glacier.

There are some amazing walks you can do around this area including one which will take you to the glacial lake called Malham Tarn which is one of only 8 upland, alkaline lakes in Europe.

Yorkshire Spotlight: Harrogate

Harrogate is a spa town in North Yorkshire. Its visitor attractions include the spa waters and beautiful gardens. The town became known as The English Spa in the Georgian Era after its waters were discovered in the 16th Century.

Harrogate has stunning architecture and a scenic backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales. So it’s not hard to see why for three consecutive years from 2013-2015, Harrogate was voted as the happiest place to live in Britain.

The town has also been the background for several films including Paddington 2 and Wuthering Heights.

Happy Easter from the Yorkshire Marketplace team! 🐣

Easter is celebrated differently all over the world. We’re looking at some of the weird and wonderful Yorkshire Easter traditions!

The World Coal Carrying Championships, Ossett, West Yorkshire

In the village of Gawthorpe in Ossett on Easter Monday the annual World Coal Carrying Championships is usually held. This event first took place in 1963 harking back to Yorkshire’s coal mining industry. Men and women race the streets of Gawthorpe carrying huge sacks of coal in an attempt to be the first one to cross the finish line!

The Pace Egg Play, Heptonstall, Calder Valley, West Yorkshire

The Pace Egg Plays are medieval mystery plays which are long-standing Easter traditions in rural English culture. Once an Easter tradition all over England, it is now only practised in a few select areas, particularly Lancashire and West Yorkshire.

Planting the Penny Hedge, Whitby, North Yorkshire

Although this traditional event does not take place on Easter weekend, its roots are still embedded in Easter culture and traditions. Exactly 40 days after Easter, this event takes place in Whitby’s upper harbour, located on the east bank of the River Esk.

Do you have any Easter traditions of your own?

We are taking a closer look at the picturesque fishing town of Staithes, located on the East Yorkshire coast, just up from Whitby.

The village lies between two headlands known as 'nabs'. Cowbar Nab and Penny Nab help shelter a small harbour where pleasure boats bob at anchor.

It has a history going back to at least the Viking era and its name comes from the Old English word for a landing place which is pronounced ‘Steers’ by the locals.

Staithes is perhaps best-known for its links with Captain Cook. The young James Cook came to Staithes in 1745 at the age of 16.

There are several great inns near the harbour. Probably the most popular is the Cod and Lobster, perched right on the waterfront. In fact, the inn is so close to the water that parts of the building have been washed away over the years!
