John Piper (1903-1992) was a major figure in Twentieth Century British art. He studied at Richmond School of Art and the Royal College of Art. Early on in his career, before the Second World War, he developed an abstract style influenced by European Modernism. During the war he was an official war artist often depicting bomb damage, most notably of the destruction of Coventry Cathedral. After the war he became one of the leading figures in the Neo-Romantic school alongside Graham Sutherland, John Minton and Keith Vaughan, often depicting scenes from the English Landscape, historic buildings. foliate heads and other themes from an idealisted or lost pastoral past but in a modernist style. Major commissions incuded designing the baptistry stained glass window for the new Coventry Cathedral which opened in 1962. His work is held in collections worldwide including the Tate Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, National Galleries of Scotland, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Indianapolis Museum of Art.

Just Andersen (1884-1943) was born in Greenland and worked in both Denmark and Sweden as a silversmith and metalwork designer in silver and bronze and other alloys such as Disko metal, which he developed. He also worked in pewter and brass. His work can be found in the National Museum in Stockholm and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.

Tsuda Eijyu (1915-2000) was a leading Twentieth Century bronze artist. Trained by master crafts man Tsuda Daiju. He became a leading designer in the second half of the Twentieth Century focusing of bronze flower vases and animal sculptures. he adopted a modernist style to these traditional items. He exhibited his work at the Japan Fine arts Exhibition where he won a grand prix in 1962. He became a memer of the Imperial Acadamy of Fine Arts and held a professorship at Tokyo School of Fine Arts. His work is held in the Metropolitan Museum in New York and in many museums in Japan.

Along with his glass and ceramics designing bother, Jacob Bang, he was involved with the Danish Pavilion at the Pairs World Fair in 1925. In the late 1920s he worked with the ceramicist Carl Halier. In 1928 he was put in charge of ceramic production at Holmegaard, better known for its glass. Later on in the 1950s he set up his own studio and continued to produce ceramics for the rest of his life. As well and monumental sculptural ceramics and heavily ribbed pieces, he also produced more standard vases and other vessels. Most of these carry a model number and monogram on the base. He is a major figure in the Danish stoneware tradition and his pieces now have a global following and command high prices. His work is held in museums worldwide.

Stig Lindberg (1916-82) was one of the greatest Scandinavian designers of the Twentieth Century. He was prolific in ceramics designing everything from tableware ranges to unique stoneware pieces. He also designed in other medium like glass and textiles. His whimsical, playful, freeform style is the epitome of the mid-century look and was a huge influence on others in the post-war years. He began his work at Gustavsberg in 1937 and stayed there until 1980. He was the winner of a long list of prestigious prizes throughout his career and his work can be found in museums across the world. An exhibition of his work was held at the National Museum in Stockholm in 2006-7.

Tapio Wirkkala (1915-85) was one of the greatest designers of the twentieth century. The glass designs he produced in the late 1940s and early 1950s especially are some of the finest examples of modernist design to be found anywhere and not just in Finland which was pioneering in the style. Inspired by nature, many of his pieces make reference to organic natural forms or to ice from the Finnish landscape. He first came to prominence at the Milan Triannale in 1951 where he won three Grand Prix in glass, wood and painting. As well as designing in glass and wood he produced works in silver and also designed jewellery and ceramics. His work is held in museums and collections worldwide.
