Father’s Day can be a special time to celebrate your dad but it can also be a difficult day for many.
For several years, my eldest children struggled with Father’s Day. Their biological father was extremely abusive and when I finally found the courage to leave and divorce him, he decided to “punish” me by walking out of their lives completely. In truth, it was the best thing he ever did for me and for them.
Two years later, I met my husband. He didn’t just love me but also stepped up and became Dad to my kids. He’s loved them as if they’re his own and all decided to call him Dad quite early on in the relationship. Most people wouldn’t even realise that he wasn’t their biological Dad as many say they look like him.
Before that though, this day would often bring a lot of emotions out, especially for my eldest, who carried the weight of those earlier years.
Now, Father’s Day holds a mix of emotions. We celebrate my husband and my Dad who are everything to our family, but it’s also a day touched by grief. My hubby lost his own father in 2023 and we have friends and loved ones who are mourning fathers or father figures no longer here.
It’s also a day to hold space for the men who are struggling too. Those who, for various reasons, can’t see their children, or who have tragically lost them or have been unable to have children.
So today, if you’re celebrating, hug your loved ones a little tighter. And if you’re hurting because of loss, absence, or painful memories, remember you’re not alone.
Sending love to everyone feeling a little tender today. xx
Sending love to all dads on this Father’s Day! And to all the parents doing both roles with their super parent capes on ❤️
And to all that fall into any of the hearts below our hearts are with you today.
