I couldn’t wait to showcase this vintage tapestry, ladder-back nursing chair, sometimes called a slipper chair which is historically designed to sit much closer to the ground than a standard dining or occasional chair.
I have thoroughly cleaned it, sanded & waxed some parts, & painted the rest - what do you think?
FYI
The low height of these chairs usually stems from several practical and historical reasons:
* Victorian Practicality: In the 18th and 19th centuries, women often wore heavy, stiff corsets and voluminous skirts. The low-slung design allowed a mother to sit comfortably and interact with small children or infants without having to bend over significantly, which would have been difficult in those garments.
* Dressing Aid: Historically, these chairs were kept in bedrooms to help people put on shoes, stockings, or slipper - hence the name ‘slipper chair’.
