What’s In Store For 2024? Car Sales & Market Growth Predictions.🤔🤔

The car industry has faced a number of challenges over the past 4 years with Covid grinding car productions to a halt in 2020 followed by a shortage of components and a delay in car deliveries in 2021 to 2022. According to AutoTrader, the car industry lost out on 3 million car sales between 2020 and 2022.

Due to the shortage of available new cars, we initially saw fewer discounts being offered by dealers on new cars and used car prices have remained high as a result. After all, we all know about supply and demand - and simply put, there hasn’t been enough supply - so car prices have held their values much better than we would normally expect to see.

So what about 2024? 🚗💨

With the supply shortfall stabilising and more new cars now coming through, 2024 should be a promising year for the motor industry. However car buyers still face a cost of living crisis, with increased mortgage or rent payments, higher energy bills and greater food costs.

Despite the economic strain on car consumers, Autotrader predicts the UK automotive marketplace will see a 4% growth in new car sales to an estimated 1.97 million car registrations in 2024.

Car sales have been slow and the manufactures face further challenges with increased competition and regulatory ZEV Mandate targets - so how will the manufacturers and dealers increase the number of car sales? According to the Autotrader article, manufacturers and dealers will offer significant discounts and finance offers to stimulate consumer demand - and in particular for pure electric models which under the ZEV Mandate must account for 22% of all car brand sales. Expect to see some great deals on electric cars this year! 👈🌟✨💥

The used car market is heavily driven by the new car market. If you buy a new car - you trade-in your existing car and that generates used car sales for the dealers. It goes without saying then, that if there is an increase in new car sales, used car sales (by default) should also increase as more cars are traded in. Auto Trader have predicted the demand for used cars will increase to an estimated 7.24 million sales this year - up from 2023.

Used car prices did start to tumble in the latter part of 2023 with the HPI director of valuations citing a 10.5% drop in the last quarter of 2023, but experts believe the market is stabilising - so no huge drops in car values predicted this year.

Drivers Wrongly Faced TFL Charges 😳🚗

Drivers with private registration numbers have been wrongly fined for ULEZ charges by the Transport for London (TFL).

A recent article by CarDealer magazine highlighted how a supercar car dealer had been billed more than £2,000 in charges for visiting London in a Land Rover Discovery - when in fact, the car had been off the road for repairs. The seller had appealed the charges, but after getting nowhere - took to social media.

CarDealer investigated and TFL refunded the fees.

TFL told CarDealer magazine that they apologised for any issues they had caused the seller and refunded all the charges. They also confirmed they have put processes in place to prevent this happening in the future. TFL stated “ There is a long-established charge dispute process where anyone who believes they have been incorrectly charged on Auto Pay can submit a dispute and we will consider the evidence”.

The seller of the Discovery was pleased with the outcome but obviously still concerned that other motorists could be getting charged. In fact, when he posted the story on social media, other drivers also reported they had faced similar problems, including those with short, private plates.

Another motorist was being charged ULEZ fees for cars that included part of his private plate - clearly an issue with the TFL cameras & technology.

If you think you have been wrongly charged, you can contact TFL and dispute the charge. Further details of the ULEZ zones and contact details visit https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/ultra-low-emission-zone.

Decoding Car Finance - The Difference Between P*P and PCH! 🤔

We are often asked by car buyers how a P*P (Personal Contract Plan) and PCH (Personal Contract Hire) differ. Whilst they may sound like similar agreements, they’re very different in how they work, and how flexible they are over the term of the agreement.

A Brief Overview......

A Personal Contract Plan (P*P) is a popular, versatile financing choice for individuals and companies, applicable to both new and used cars. P*P’s let you finance the full price of the car or pay a deposit, followed by monthly payments and a final 'bubble' - the Guaranteed Future Value (GFV). The GFV is a value the finance company guarantees the car will be worth at the end of your finance term and is an optional payment.

At the end of the term, you have the option to own the car, trade-it in for another shiny new car, or hand it back and walk away. The GFV is like your financial crystal ball, predicting the future value of your car and (hopefully) providing some equity in your car at the end of the term. Best of all, if your car’s trade-in value has dropped below the GFV, you hand the car back and walk away!

P*P is a versatile option, allowing for ownership at the end of the term if desired. If the car’s value is higher than the GFV – you will receive the equity. If your car‘s value is lower than the GFV, you simply hand the car back and walk away*.

Now let’s take a look at Personal Contract Hire (PCH) which is the leasing trendsetter for new cars! No ownership, just an optional upfront advance rental, followed by monthly rentals and then hand the car back - perfect for those who prefer not to have ownership commitments.

Contract Hire is a popular choice for both private individuals and companies, and there are many online leasing companies offering great deals.

With this type of finance arrangement, the rentals are subject to VAT, there are no ‘options’ at the end to own your car and the vehicle is handed back to the leasing company.
