WAIT… why is there a second Suitman?

Watch the loop. Halfway through, a second Suitman appears just behind him, slightly out of place. It’s such a small shift, but suddenly the escalator feels like a glitch in reality.

This is Escalator, one of the five films made for A.A.R., Yohji Yamamoto’s collaboration with Japanese menswear label D’URBAN. The campaign was credited to Young Kim, and the suit is the only thing holding this strange little scene together.

Did you catch the second Suitman straight away?

Why does this Yohji Yamamoto campaign end with a man in a bikini?

It starts with him alone on a train in a suit. Then figures with devil horns close in around him, and the film turns into something much stranger than a menswear advert.

This is the second film in A.A.R.’s A/W 1997–98 campaign, credited to Young Kim (aka Suitman). A.A.R. was Yohji Yamamoto’s long-running Japanese menswear collaboration with D’URBAN. The point was tailoring, but the campaign didn’t play by the rules of a normal men's suit advert.

By the end, the suit is gone and he’s in a bikini. We miss when men's fashion editorials were this risky!

We’re sharing all four A.A.R. campaign films. This is number Subway.

A Yohji Yamamoto archive find you might not know: A.A.R., his menswear collaboration with D’URBAN.

A.A.R. stood for Against All Risks. Launched in 1992, it brought Yohji’s design into Japanese everyday menswear, with the collaboration running for around thirteen years, through A/W 2005–06. The label continued afterwards.

This film is from the A/W 1997–98 A.A.R. campaign, credited to Young Kim. Watch the hands moving over and around the suit. They almost crowd the person wearing it, turning a tailored jacket into the centre of this strange, intimate scene. It’s a very different kind of menswear campaign: quiet tailoring, unsettling imagery, and a suit that somehow feels like the main character.

If you’re into 1990s fashion, Japanese designers, vintage Yohji Yamamoto, or designer archive campaigns, this is one to know. We’re sharing all four A.A.R. films, starting here. No 1 - SIDEWAY (turned portrait for the gram)

Simone Rocha broderie trousers: intricate textile work, grounded by a modern cut. The kind of statement piece that needs little more than a fine knit or an oversized shirt.
