Upcycled from vintage silk Japanese Kimono Obi, our bags bring the intricate patterns, rich colours, and craftsmanship into something designed to be carried and enjoyed every day.

From table runners to cushions, and now bags, we are constantly working out ways to re-appreciate these textiles, by giving it a new life.

Kimono (着物)
- For more formal settings
- Crafted from luxurious fabrics, such as silk, featuring intricate patterns and techniques that have been passed down through generations.
- Worn throughout the year, for ceremonies and celebrations etc.,

Yukata (浴衣)
- For more casual settings, often worn in summer
- Lighter, traditionally crafted by cotton
- Worn in summer, often at festivals, fireworks displays, and hot spring resorts etc.,

Regardless, both are an important part of Japan’s rich textile tradition.

Observed each summer, Obon (お盆) is one of Japan’s most important traditions. A Japanese Buddhist custom to honour the spirits of one's ancestors. During this time, people return to their hometowns, visit family graves, and spend time together, reflecting on those who came before them.

In addition, across the country communities gather for Bon Odori - traditional dances that celebrate remembrance, gratitude, and togetherness. While each region has its own style of dance, the spirit is the same: Keeping traditions alive by sharing them with others.

It’s a gentle reminder that culture isn’t only preserved through history - it’s carried forward through the people who continue to celebrate it 👘

Starting from tomorrow, 1st Aug, some of our handcrafted silk Obi cushions can be found in person at SoLo Craft Fair's Elephant & Castle Shop - available to see, touch, and take home without waiting for delivery 🚚

While only a selection are being placed in store, if you have been curious to see it in person before buying, this is the opportunity to do so!

In Edo-period Japan (1603–1868), sumptuary laws were introduced to encourage modesty and reinforce social order 🇯🇵

For many townspeople, outward displays of wealth through clothing were discouraged. Yet creativity often finds a way.

The Obi - the sash worn with a kimono, became one of the most expressive elements of dress. Through intricate weaving, symbolic motifs, and refined craftsmanship, people could showcase individuality while remaining within the spirit of the law 👘

Sometimes the most interesting stories are hidden in plain sight.
