Merry Christmas Eve ✨️🎅🎄
Where I come from, we start Christmas celebrations on Christmas Eve, which is actually the most important day of Christmas.
In Poland, Christmas Eve, known as "Wigilia," is a cherished tradition filled with customs and festive rituals. The day typically begins with a fast, broken only by the appearance of the first star in the evening sky. Families gather for a hearty, twelve-dish meal, featuring dishes like carp, pierogi, and kutia.
Before the meal, the breaking of the Christmas wafer, or "opłatek," takes place. Family members share good wishes and forgive any grievances from the past year while exchanging pieces of the wafer. This symbolizes unity and reconciliation.
An essential part of the Polish Christmas Eve is the placing of hay under the tablecloth, reminiscent of the humble manger. It serves as a reminder of the simplicity of the birth of Jesus. Another tradition involves leaving an empty seat at the table, symbolizing a place for an unexpected guest or a departed loved one.
The festive atmosphere is enhanced by the singing of Christmas carols, with the youngest family member often leading the singing. After the meal, families attend the midnight Mass, known as the "Pasterka," where the joyous celebration of Christmas continues.
Overall, Polish Christmas Eve traditions emphasize family, togetherness, and the spiritual significance of the holiday.
