Product Recall: Dual Pad

Hi All,
I have been made aware that Dual Pad is not proving reliable for a lot of people. Having previously endorsed this product on my show, I certainly have egg on my face.

I have now removed Dual Pad from the Monster Magic website to prevent further disappointment.

If you have already bought it from Monster and you are less than satisfied, then as with any order, please get in touch for a full refund. (There is no need to send it back to me as that I don't want to cause any further inconvenience.) As well as a refund I will also send you a free copy of Noted by Chris Rawlins as soon as it is released.

Apologies again,
Best Wishes,
Alex

What a joy it was to be a small part of Junior Day at the The Magic Circle.

If you don’t know Junior Day is the calendar highlight of the Young Magic Circle, the club for magicians aged between 10 to 18. It is packed with lectures and competitions.

What it is also full of is, support, laughter and joy. Those kids really can teach us adults a thing or two.

You wouldn’t know there was a competition as such, the nerves were minimal from the competitors, they were all just thrilled to have a chance to perform their acts. To have the opportunity to do their hobby and have a lot of fun doing so.

And they could feel like that because they knew they had the full support of every other member in the club. Everyone was a well-wisher.

The mixture of this safety and their youth produced such a diverse set of acts, routines, and styles that it was far more entertaining than watching an adult competition. They were prepared to take risks, be themselves and execute their own ideas with 100% commitment. To take their concepts to the very limits of their imagination.

These risks meant the magic felt much more like art than craft. To quote Banksy,
“It isn’t art unless it has the potential to be a disaster”

As we grow up, avoiding that disaster becomes more important than trying to achieve the original art we are capable of. We take it all too seriously and fear takes over. We worry about the ‘Rights’ and ‘Wrongs’ of our craft when there really are none. We restrict ourselves due to imaginary constraints, maybe from a perceived piece of wisdom handed down, a quote in a book or others judgement.

Magic isn’t hurt by people breaking the ‘rules’ they are pushing it forward, it is those following the rules that are holding it back.

Let’s be big kids!

REVIEW: Destiny Deal by Craig Petty

I wonder if it is possible for Craig Petty to release a trick without causing some sort of storm. Even this simple card trick has attracted the level of vitriol normally reserved for Putin.

The issue is that it is billed not only as an Any Card At Any Number, but a bloody good one when in reality it isn’t an ACAAN at all. It is a fun ‘Find a Selection’ trick.

ACAAN is a pure mentalism trick, the cards are just a vehicle for it (a handy collection of 52 identifiable objects), and the cards remain static whilst the card and number are named. At no point should the card be removed from the deck, it then becomes a selected card to be found.

Now hands up I’m not the biggest fan of ACAAN as it’s a bit dry for my taste but I have always and still do enjoy having my chosen card lost and found in an impossible manner. I’m often fooled, believing it to be genuinely lost and I’m filled with amazement and joy when it is discovered.

It is a simple plot of the boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back variety and it can have any number of twists and turns which all add to the enjoyment.

This is what Destiny Deal is, a card trick with a good hook and audience participation that is as much to perform as it is to watch.

You ask if your audience would like to see the most amazing card trick ever, whether they want to or not you show that you have an instruction card with steps for performing an Amazing Card trick. You read through the steps, having the deck shuffled, a card ‘selected’ and lost in the deck. The deck is shuffled once more and a number freely named. The participant deals the cards face up and hands you the cards at the number, which you reveal to be the selection.

The method is clever, bold, simple and to the point, in fact so to the point Craig only managed to string out the tutorial for 45 minutes.

The gimmick makes it almost self-working bar a card control and Craig teaches a variety of deceptive yet easy ones. The rest is acting and handling the gimmick properly.

Two handlings are taught one for seated at a table and a walk-around version. Personally I’d do the walkaround one regardless of the situation. For some reason Craig performs the ‘move’ at a latter point in the seated routine and I don’t think it is as natural.

There is one minor discrepancy but that is when the gimmick really comes into its own and makes it all seem fair and above board.

Not surprisingly the choreography is well thought out and motivated to justify how everything is handled, provided you play this as an entertaining and lively journey.

What is also nice is that the Instruction card is all you need to carry and that can be in your wallet or under the cellophane of the card box should you chose to perform Destiny Deal spontaneously. If I was adding this to my repertoire I may get a fake delivery envelope and patter some nonsense about having just ordered a new trick.. you get the idea.

Destiny Deal is not going to win trick of the year however it is a strong card trick with a terrific hook that is easy to do, handed to you on plate for just £14.99.

So the poll is now closed, the results are pretty clear:

Effect – 30%
Method – 0%
Presentation – 70%

Two peeps did vote for Method but they also voted for the other two options, so they neutralised themselves.

Nothing really surprising I suppose, no one sees the method but people enjoy the effect the and presentation.

I’ve taken the liberty of putting into an equation:
Effect = Method + Presentation

It is the combination of method and presentation that makes up the effect, which means to make the effect better, we need to improve either the method or the presentation. The value of the method is fixed* if it works there is little room for improvement, but the value of the presentation can be increased to improve the effect.

The effect and presentation combined are responsible for the strength and type of emotion created by the trick. The method can produce lots of effects depending upon the framing given by the presentation. For example, a shuttle pass can transform, teleport or cause time travel based on how it is framed and presented.

What this does mean though, is that we are all capable of being great entertaining magicians without doing difficult tricks. (Yet we often judge a trick by its method.)

We spend a great deal of time mastering the workings but not enough time on developing our ‘non-magically’ abilities. How much time do we dedicate to practicing and studying presentation skills such as acting, timing, storytelling. And of course, creating new themes and writing new stories to bind our magic in.

These skills will heighten your magic exponentially, far more than anything else.

*a better method can improve a trick but not by very much.

Could the Mercury Card Fold be the sleight that is responsible for more tricks being in bottom drawers than any other?

Its ex*****on in essence is dead easy. You can describe the mechanics to a lay person in seconds, and they could be giving it a pretty good bash in a minute.

And there lies the reason it is a trick assassin, a move that is easy yet takes a lot of effort to master. It is easy to buy an effect that uses it having convinced yourself this time you will overcome your fears; you’ll be able to get an accurate fold and no one will notice you doing it.

You will also become obsessed with doing it as quickly as possible.

Having a messy card fold can spoil a trick, not because the audience notice, but because you will rush to get it unfolded. Spoiling any build up to the reveal. I really don’t think accuracy is as important as we think (chances are only you will be aware of any discrepancy between the two folded cards) but it does provide confidence.

The general advice I hear is get 5 packs of old cards and sit in front of the telly, folding away. I have no idea which element of the MCF this is meant to help you with, if your fold is naturally squiffy then folding 250 cards squiffy just makes a morale busting mess.

The MCF needs to be practiced in a smarter way.

Just do the first fold and stop. Look at where are the fold is and how the short edges overlap (assuming you haven’t nailed it). Is the fold in the middle or closer one end? Is the front edge higher that the back edge? This indicates if the fold happened too soon or too late or you lowered the hand moving back.

Now do the fold again, slowly. Watching your hands and seeing how the card bends. Move your fingers and adjust until you find out the position and motion to do that first fold close to the middle.

Keep folding slowly whilst watching making sure you get the fold as central as possible. At the same time checking it is a straight fold with the edges parallel and you aren’t bringing the front of the card backwards at an angle.

Don’t be scared to make bold changes or try different hand positions. You may want the deck quite low in your palm and use the crotch of your thumb against the deck as a guide, you may want it higher with your palm almost perpendicular. There is no correct answer, but by making mistakes and playing the physics of the move will become more apparent.

Once you can do the fold in the middle and square when looking, only then try with out watching. Hopefully, having played about a fair bit already, you will understand the cause and therefore the solution to any misalignment.

Once you have nailed the first fold, start adding the second fold, with the same process.

Only when you have the correct mechanics in mind should you start blasting through the old decks. Even then not mindlessly but seeing if you are making mistakes and adjusting accordingly. Don’t practice mistakes!

Once your fold is good enough, you simply need a little bit of misdirection to carry it out. This is using integrated into most routines anyway. Often you draw everyone’s attention to an impossible location with the heat off the deck.

If I feel exposed or on stage, I have found tugging up my sleeves a great reason to pass the deck from hand to hand, making the fold in two steps.
Experiment there is no correct answer.

And now the best bit, you can cheat a bit!

Perfect Score by Jon Allen is a card scoring device which makes accurate folding a doddle. You can prep the whole deck in a few minutes or just do one card and force it.

Matthew Wright has just released Easy Fold which takes another approach entirely, perhaps slightly less versatile. But a full review is coming.

REVIEW: Phantom by Hide
This is probably the best misdirection in magic I’ve seen for a long time.

The effect features a portrait of Harry Houdini and on the mount are his date of birth and death. Unfortunately, the date of his death is out by a couple of years.

Now this is a mistake, no doubt a typo, but magicians on a well-known forum feel this is an excellent reason not to buy it. Distracting themselves from all the myriad of other issues this trick has.

The main Phantom effect is that a card is selected and then the picture of Harry Houdin ‘comes to life’ and pulls a card of his pocket, but it is the wrong card. All is not lost however as with a wave of your hand the card in the photo changes to the selection.

While the incorrect date is annoying to us magicians but I seriously doubt anyone in your audience would notice or care.

However it does hint at the lack of thought that has gone into this product.

The picture side of the trick comes ready-made but the gimmicks you need to actually perform the effects, you will need to make yourself. You get the bits and bobs apart from glue and tape so you should be able to do it immediately, however get this operation wrong and you have ruined your purchase.

It isn’t hard to do, but it needs to be precise for the illusion to work, you don’t have much margin for error. Perhaps this is why the Hide team didn’t chance doing it themselves.

The gimmicks if used as per the sparse tutorial will soon show signs of wear and tear. How many times can you carry a photo in your trouser pocket and palm it out before the corners are battered? You don’t get any spares or replacements for £200+

The tutorial, which claims to be detailed is at best adequate. You don’t get a real performance or walk through of the effect. It covers the gimmick making and the rudimentary action of the card switches, but no routine, no nuances.

I’m still not sure what I’m supposed to do with the card after it has been selected, do I just have it returned to the deck which I put away, or should I vanish it somehow? Is Harry producing the chosen card or is it just a prediction?

I’m not 100% convinced any of the Hide team have even performed it in a live situation.

I also found the trailer to be misleading. I got the impression that Houdini could reveal a card and you change the card and then a spectator can tap the glass and verify the card is behind it. This is not the case and the more I watch the trailer, the more I’m convinced it is deliberately edited to give this impression.

The more I have thought about this release, the more angry I have become. £200 is huge amount of money and anything with that price tag should be produced professionally with care and integrity. This is half baked and infuriating.
