Maker Monday - Sharon Flowers 👇🏾

We're always on the hunt for unique accessories to offer our customers who are looking to add cultural touches to their home or give an appropriate housewarming or wedding gift. So when we came across Sharon Flower's work we were really excited. 

Sharon is a textile artist and designer whose work is inspired by her heritage. It was her Africa-shaped rugs that first caught our eye. She also works with stained glass and we have just taken delivery of these beautiful suncatchers and lamps with a cultural twist.

We'll be putting them up in the shop and on our website later this week so let us know if anything 'catches' your eye!

If we don't tell our own stories, noone else will 👇🏾

Over the last few years there have been real efforts to cement carnival's origin story before it gets appropriated or lost in the mists of commercialism. Last year we had 's carnival billboard takeover honouring whose murder sparked the uprising that led to organising the first iteration of what would become Notting Hill Carnival.

This year Dr. Jak Beula of unveiled a blue plaque celebrating carnival pioneers and leaders in the 5 disciplines of carnival (mas band, steel pan, calypso and soca, sound system and costume design).

The plaque will have a permanent home at Westbourne Park underground station. Go and see if you're in the araa.

FUN FACT 1: the plaque is the largest commemorative blue plaque in the world.

FUN FACT 2: the plaque commemorates 70 people but lists only 69 names. The 70th spot is for all the unnamed people whose work over the years have made carnival what it is today.

'If only we had turned out for him like this when he was alive' 👇🏾

This observation from last Monday's 30,000-strong vigil for Professor Jason Arday reminded us of the philosophy from southern Africa called 'Ubuntu', which translates as "I am because we are". It means that people are connected to each other. Your well-being is tied to the well-being of others, and if someone in the community suffers or struggles, everyone feels it and helps.

Ubuntu teaches us that the individual and the community are one and the same and this interconnectedness is the key to living a better life. Many communities have a similar philosophy but somehow we seem to have lost it in the west.

If you would like to know more about the principles and practices of Ubuntu, we recommend the book 'Everyday Ubuntu: Living Better Together The African Way' by Mungi Ovington. Find it in-store or online.

Carnival is 60 this year and there are many events to mark this landmark anniversary.
 
We spoke to Wayne Campbell, visual activist and founder of gallery, about his latest book , which celebrates 60 years of carnival and activism.

The book launch is tonight and Wayne Campbell and his co-author Wayne Crichlow will be talking about carnival as cultural resistance. There will also be a photographic exhibition and book signing.
