I miss my studio.
Right now it’s too hot to work in. Sweaty, unbearable. Far too ginger for this sort of weather. Potentially dangerous, actually. Though danger has always seemed to be a place where I thrive.
So instead, I’m pondering. Thinking. Dreaming. Conceptualising. Learning the theory before I start experimenting with some new ideas.
It’s productive, in its own way. The notebooks are filling up. Screenshots are being saved. I’m texting my pals ‘what about this - hmmmm’ Research rabbit, mole, badger holes are being followed. But it feels a little like creative purgatory.
Because the itch is strong. Cover my fingers either way mittens.
I think most people who make things will understand that feeling. The desire to create isn’t always a gentle invitation, sometimes it’s a compulsion. A persistent tug at your sleeve. An unfinished sentence. A song stuck in your head. A loop a loop a loop.
You can read about the process. You can plan the process. You can think about the process endlessly.
But eventually you have to get your hands dirty.
So for now I’m collecting ideas like magpies collect shiny things, waiting for the temperature to drop enough that I can return to my little furnace and start turning thoughts into objects.
The making will come soon enough.
Until then, I’m daydreaming with purpose. Research is my second love after glass.
