It's so we've decided to take a break from packing orders and share with you all some of the people behind Ara sheets... Meet Meghanadh Gharami. Meghanadh has been working in the stitching department of our factory in India for the past 10 years. Apart from a fair wage, he receives house rent allowance (5% of his gross salary), pension, provident fund contribution, annual bonus, subsidised meals, scholarship for his daughter's education, and many other benefits that are a norm in the developed world. Meghanadh is also the Secretary of the Trade Union.
Five years on from 24 April 2013, the day that Rana Plaza collapsed, taking away the lives of 1,138 factory workers and affecting more than 3,000 families - we are sat here wishing, amongst other things, they had a trade union.. We wish they had some kind of representation for collective strength to stand up against oppressive company managements that forced them to come into work, despite visible cracks within the building.
We wish there was someone hearing their voices...
Whilst we can't undo the past, we can make our purchases matter, not just in fashion, but another big consumer of textiles - bed linens. 🛌
All Ara Living bed linen is produced in Fairtrade certified factories - from ginning, spinning, weaving to stitching and hand-finishing - all mills have worker welfare central to company management. From seed to sheet, all our bedding is ethically and sustainably made.
And that's not it. We realise that not all workers are as fortunate as Meghanadh. So we have committed to contributing a part of our profits to help fight modern slavery. Help us in our cause - think of who made your sheets.
Because everyone deserves a good night's sleep 😴
