Let’s talk fabric recommendations for the Leah sewing pattern 👀

Shift dress

🧵 Recommended: Mid-weight wovens that will hold the gentle A-line silhouette.

🛍️ Look for: Linen, twill, lightweight canvas, jacquard... even tweed for a winter layering piece.

💓 Style tip: Take advantage of the minimal style lines to show off a bold print.

Shift top

🧵 Recommended: Softer light- to mid-weight wovens.

🛍️ Look for: Linen and blends, cotton lawn, viscose (rayon), double gauze.

💓 Style tip: Get extra fabric to make a matching pair of Winnie trousers or Esti shorts.

Peplum top

🧵 Recommended: Light- to mid-weight wovens that gather easily.

🛍️ Look for: Lawn, seersucker, broderie anglaise, viscose (rayon).

💓 Style tip: An embroidered border would look *chef’s kiss* on the peplum hem.

Midi dress

🧵 Recommended: Light- to mid-weight wovens that gather easily.

🛍️ Look for: Poplin, sateen, lawn, seersucker, double gauze.

💓 Style tip: Choose between a crisp fabric with body to give the dress a more dramatic shape, or a lighter, drapey material that will hang more softly.

So I made a decision about what to do with this fabric! 🍅🫑🍋🌶️🍊

You might remember a few weeks ago I asked for your help as I was umming and ahhing about which pattern to make. And you had thoughts!

In the end I decided I’d get most wear out of full length Esti trousers 🪡

They took about 15 mins to cut out (about 14 mins of which was spent trying to avoid placing a dodgy-looking halved pepper over the crotch), and another 30 mins to sew together - join the legs, insert elastic, stitch the hem, done. Gotta love a speedy make!

I’d usually taper the legs in a bit on trousers for my petite-yet-hippy shape, but I decided to leave these ones extra wide. I love love LOVE how light and flowy they are 🫶

Now the only Q is do I make a matching Leah top with the leftover material? 😯

If your sewing project calls for bias binding, you CAN buy it ready-made – but it’s useful to know how to make your own so you can choose the width, colour, and print 🌸

Making bias binding is a great way to use up fabric scraps too! ✂️

Swipe through to find out how to make it – with or without a bias binding tool 👉

If you are using a tool, make sure you get the right size. E.g. a 12mm (1/2in) maker creates 12mm (1/2in) single fold bias binding, or 6mm (1/4in) double fold bias binding.

Once you know how to make it, you can use it to finish necklines and armholes on projects such as the Leah top + dress, where a facing would be too bulky, or to add a fancy detail to the loose edges of facings, such as on the Sonny jacket and Noa pinafore. Search ‘bias binding’ at tillyandthebuttons.com for full tutorials on both uses 🧵

One pattern. Two completely different Leah looks by 🤩💕

Both created with thifted fabric - the first one a gorgeous Liberty lawn peplum top with the signature side ties, the second a sweet shift dress sewn in a floral plaid 🌸

One of our favourite things about our new Leah pattern is how versatile it is. Sew an easy-wear shift top or dress, add the gathered skirt for a peplum top or tiered dress, and play around with the optional side ties.

There’s SIX different looks in total - who’s going to be the first to sew them all??
