HOW LOADS OF LADIES FELL INTO MY LAP!
In times gone by, people loved to stay in touch just as much as they do now, and from the late eighteen hundreds, they did it with gorgeous lithographed, often somewhat hectically hand-tinted, images on cards and postcards printed by the thousand for every occasion you can imagine - as well as several you probably can’t.
In addition to the thousands of commercially produced images, people started taking themselves along to photographic studios for portraits or staged shots, paying extra for additional copies to send to family and friends who were interested - as well as to those who probably weren’t.
Once I started collecting these images, I was hooked and spent a fair amount of time ferreting in cobwebbed attic corners or scraping the bottoms of garage sale boxes. I suppose it was inevitable that copy lines would start presenting themselves, and truth to tell, writing these proved to be a highly therapeutic alternative to banging my head against a brick wall when negotiating the ups and downs of daily life. In time the Vintage Ladies became the quirky branding for my copywriting business, and from there, evolved into the Vintage Ladies Gift Books range.
Because I’ve always found captioning the Vintage Ladies to be an activity that, sadly, can keep me amused for hours some of them are quite likely to make an appearance in a newsletter I’m putting together.
