James Purdey established his gun and rifle making business in 1814 at premises in Prince's street. Within ten years he was being spoken of as the finest gunmaker in London. On 12 February 1868 the Prince of Wales, who became King Edward VII, granted James Purdey his Royal Warrant of Appointment. A decade later, on 28 March 1878, having purchased many Purdey guns and rifles, Queen Victoria assigned

a Royal Warrant to Purdey, as has every British monarch since. Four years later Purdey moved into Audley House, a specially built property in newly developed Mayfair. 57 South Audley Street is still Purdey’s home to this day, and its famed Long Room, originally built as a working office, is today revered in the game-gun community. By continuing our tradition of craftsmanship, excellence, and attention to detail, we hope that many generations to come will be able to enjoy the exceptional pleasure of owning a bespoke Purdey gun.

Purdey at the Royal Berkshire.

On 12th of March a team of crack shots descended on Purdey at the Royal Berkshire shooting ground for a brilliant day of clays.

Four teams tackled mature woodlands, rolling grasses and highly technical challenges.

Elevenses gave way to a hearty lunch inside the lodge, with venison sirloin and fine cheeses setting the tone.

In this week’s Purdey Post Patrick Galbraith writes “When it comes to the countryside being misunderstood and misrepresented, there is no thornier topic than Grouse shooting.”

Tom Payne, when interviewed, said it’s high time that grouse keepers were given more praise for the work they do..

Of course, this is exactly the aim of the annual Purdey Awards for Game & Conservation.

Now in 27th year, the awards have been instrumental in championing the regeneration, welfare and sustainability of the UK’s leading farms and estates.

It’s an opportunity to honour the people working behind the scenes – the gamekeepers, the beaters, the local ornithologists – whose knowledge and vision often go unrecognised.

A Strong Foundation.

It is now quite hard to comprehend in 2026 that Athol Purdey had to be convinced to produce an Over-and-Under gun when you consider it's one of our most popular styles today.

We had previously created a 16-bore Over-and-under percussion rifle as early as 1843.

The first Purdey breech-loading action was built in 1925 and was overly reinforced by modern standards.
