From non-stick frying pans to the biro pen ‘game changing’ ideas might not always be complicated but that doesn’t make them easy to realise. The Tannus Tyres brand has developed over the last 10 years with the aim to create the world’s first non-puncture, airless bicycle tyre. Company CEO, Y K Lee and his father both have respected reputations as chemical engineers and innovator
s within polymer manufacture. In 2005 they established a Texol material with a shock absorbent qualities and the malleability and responsiveness of rubber. The father/son partners had already seen the material utilised within the sports shoe production, however Y K Lee envisaged that this material could help realise his aim to instigate a new era in non-puncture bicycle tyres. Research and development of this product provided YK Lee with a continual series of hurdles which tested his eminent ability and doggedness. Early polymer tyre prototypes melted in the sun, skidded on wet tarmac through insufficient traction or wore down at an unacceptable rate. Since August 2011 Tannus tyres have been producing no-puncture bike tyres and continually reassessing and improving the product in response to customer feedback and reviews from the industry press. The 2014 model presents the high watermark in the evolution of Tannus Tyres. A refined polymeric compound has been fashioned into a tyre lighter, more comfortable and compatible with a wider variety of rims than ever before.
