The world of roses, while colourful, glamorous and romantic, can also be perplexing. Whatโ€™s the difference between an old rose and a patio rose? What distinguishes a floribunda from a hybrid tea? And how do you tell a climber from a rambler? Climbers and ramblers are often, and understandably, confused. But the distinctions between them are important when considering where to plant and how to care for them.

Nowโ€™s the time to get spring bulbs in the ground, and the right compost makes all the difference.

Our Westland Bulb Specialist Planting Mix is a peat-free blend enriched with zinc complex, formulated to support stronger root growth and produce healthier bulbs with longer-lasting flowers.

To plant outdoors, dig a hole 4 to 6 inches deep and add a layer of compost, then place bulbs firmly with the shoot facing upwards. Cover with compost, leaving the shoot visible, firm in and water thoroughly, then feed regularly once flowering begins.

Now that Septemberโ€™s here, itโ€™s prime planting time for spring bulbs.

Our range of daffodils, alliums, narcissus, tulips and crocuses is fully stocked, ready to go into the ground while the soil is still warm.

Get them in over the next few weeks, and theyโ€™ll have plenty of time to settle in before the first frosts, ready to reward you with colour come spring.

This week, we ask an odd question: can insects self-medicate? It started with a cluster of strange amber and black insects found hiding in the Ajuga on the bedding tables one Sunday morning in the plant area at Alexandra Palace Garden Centre & Cafรฉ.

What we discovered led us into the science of pharmacophagy, where insects seek out plant chemicals not for food, but for defence, mating and even treating themselves. Find out what these mysterious visitors turned out to be, and how a common garden plant might be doubling as insect medicine.

"What is it?", I inquire, putting down my coffee cup and walking over to where she is hovering in the bedding area. It is Sunday, and before opening to the public we always inspect

Did you know autumn is one of the best times to plant roses? ๐ŸŒน

The soil is still warm and moist from summer, giving new roots the chance to establish quickly before the plant goes dormant for winter. That head start means your rose can burst into growth come spring, ready to put on a strong display, with far less watering needed than if you'd planted in the spring instead.

Bare-root roses can go in any time between October and the end of March, but planting them now, while the soil is still warm, gives the best results.

Please note that stock may vary across our centres. If you need any advice on which of our roses would be best suited for your garden, feel free to ask one of our knowledgeable team members.
