Kate Instone’s Villa Blush is a home built for hosting, and the lighting had to keep pace with it. Discreet architectural detailing keeps the fittings out of sight, so the eye goes to the layering instead: dramatic where a room calls for it, soft everywhere else. Intuitive controls let the space shift from a quiet family evening to a full house of guests at the flick of a preset, no rewiring the mood room by room. It’s the kind of scheme that works precisely because you never notice it working.

Joinery lighting only really works when you can’t see it working. In this video, Florian Tesoro, our Sales Specification Manager for the Paris team, talks through two of our smallest fixtures, the Vorsa Dot and the Minim, and where each one earns its place inside a piece of cabinetry or millwork. Both are built around the same miniature, 97 CRI, 2700K light source, available in narrow, medium and wide beams, but they’re specified differently: the Minim’s IP44 rating gives it the range to work in more demanding joinery, from bathroom vanities to bar units, while the Vorsa Dot’s 360° rotation and 90° tilt make it the more adjustable choice for open shelving and display, where the beam needs fine-tuning once the fitting is already in place. Small fixtures, precise decisions.

A house this considered doesn’t need a lighting system you have to think about. Three preset scenes carry this rammed earth home through the day: bright and functional in daylight hours, softened for early evening, and shifted again for entertaining, all without a single switch to hunt for. Layered lighting means nothing is ever over-lit, and exterior illumination keeps depth visible from inside after dark, so the connection between the house and its surrounding landscape never disappears once the sun goes down.

Rammed earth doesn’t ask to be dressed up, it asks to be seen. Walls of compacted earth run from the entrance hall through to a curving spiral staircase in this home, and the lighting design leans into that rather than working against it: soft uplighting from ground level lets the natural texture, depth and tonal variation of the material read as the architecture itself, not just a backdrop for it. It’s a building method with real roots on this side of the Atlantic too, echoed in adobe and rammed earth homes across the American Southwest, and the same instinct applies wherever it’s built: let the material do the talking.

Kate Instone’s Villa Blush in Dubai takes its lighting cues from an unexpected source: the traditional English country house, reworked for a home built around glass, stone and generous natural light. Interior design comes from Kate Instone’s Blush International, with John Cullen Lighting handling the scheme throughout, from four uplit columns anchoring the double-height entrance hall to a dining area where a floor-to-ceiling glass wall lets daylight and artificial light meet. In the basement, where a dark palette, wood cladding and mirrored surfaces could easily have gone wrong, precise beam control and high-CRI LEDs hold the mood without glare or reflection. Upstairs, a chandelier above the bed and quiet, low-level lighting through the principal suite bring it back to something closer to a country house bedroom than a Dubai villa. Three lighting scenes, Bright, Mood and Low, let the whole house shift between all of it in a moment.

Walking through the home as it moves from bright, sunlit terraces to a richly layered evening scheme through the hallways, staircase, and dining room, the two talk about why lighting design carries so much weight in how a home actually feels to live in, day to night. It’s been a genuinely rewarding project for our Middle East team to work on alongside such a talented studio, and there’s more to come; a closer look at the project follows soon.

Beneath this North London home is a pool with no natural daylight of its own, so the lighting had to create the atmosphere from nothing. A single installation floats above the water, its glow rippling across the surface and softening as the evening settles in. Run at a warm 2400K, the same tone carries through into the spa and cinema beyond, so the whole floor reads as one considered scheme rather than a series of separate rooms.

In a Grade-listed London home, an award-winning lighting scheme was designed around a client’s growing art collection, treating the house as a home away from home built for living with and around the work.

Each piece was considered individually: precise spotlights hold the scale of larger canvases, picture lights bring a softer, more traditional touch, and discreet fittings throughout let texture and materiality speak for themselves.

At the threshold to the private spaces, a sculptural moment combines uplighting and downlighting, giving the sequence rhythm and a genuine sense of arrival.

Here, light becomes as much a curatorial tool as a functional one.
