Summer Solstice sale Opens at 8am Saturday 20th June.

I did a wonderful photoshoot with .uk & Louisa Raven. Handmade Blown Glass using my ceramics & Louisa’s beautiful glass, I thought the images were so apt to pair with items in my sale this weekend.
There’s lots of serving bowls & plates, amongst the usual array of slightly imperfect perfect mugs.. & one very special limited edition 45cm Centrepiece Bowl. I only made a couple of these, painted loosely in tonal slips for last years Sarah James MBE .. I held onto this one as it’s so delightful. But I’m ready to let go & release it to one lucky customer to snap up this weekend!☀️🤍☀️

I’ve been quiet on here for a while, but busy in the studio making for various large orders.
I’ve had a few challenges.. arguably fairly normal with slip casting, especially when adding colour to the body, large amounts of colour can act as a flux & distort the shapes in the kiln.
Vitrifying porcelain also distorts the shapes, as you can imagine it’s frustrating to get to the end of an order only to realise pieces aren’t quite as perfect as expected & have to make the order again.

But the good news is, you love a sale! Pieces are only slightly off the mark & discounted to reflect this.

I’m also gathering samples & end of line items too. I’ve built the range up over 15 years & have over 50 shapes altogether & it’s time to have a rejig & freshen up what I make...& I’m also starting to plan new pieces.

So make the most of the sale to buy pieces that perhaps you kept meaning to add to your collection.

Slipcasting Espresso cups.

I’m using porcelain slip to cast small espresso cups.

I leave the cups to cast for about 10 minutes, this is dependant on the type of clay & how the slip is set up, the thickness can be adjusted easily with water or sodium silicate, but testing the pint weight first helps with gauging & measuring the consistency.

The handles are cast separately & cast solid, the plugs are actually the reservoir of the mould, so I can fill the mould up fully without having a hollow in the handle.

The handles are stuck onto the cup with a small amount of slip & the excess can be tidied up with a brush or I use a knife just to make the join as net as possible.

This is one of the most satisfying processes involved in slipcasting.. trimming the soft clay to ensure the edge of the shape is flat.

The mould has a ledge or reservoir just inside so that it can be over filled with casting slip.
When the casting time is up, 30mins for this big bowl, the excess liquid clay or slip is emptied & the rim can be trimmed back using the ledge as a flat guide.
It ensures a level & consistent finish to the bowl shape. 🙌
