Happy Krampusnacht!
Tonight December 5th is Krampusnacht, the eve of St Nicholas Day! While Good Ol' Saint Nick, prepares to reward the well-behaved, his horned, hairy companion, Krampus, is out and about.
According to Alpine folklore, Krampus is the shadow of Yuletide cheer, reminding us that there are consequences for naughty behavior! He's traditionally known for punishing the mischievous with Birch branches or even carrying them away in his sack.
So, whether you've been naughty or nice, it's a perfect night to embrace the darker, wilder side of holiday traditions!
Have a thrilling Krampusnacht! Stay safe, and perhaps check under your bed..... just in case. 😉

The Shadow of Saint Nick
The air is thick, a velvet, freezing cloak, beyond the pain, the Yuletide carols choke. No silver sleigh, no reindeer bells ring clear, but in the snow, a dreadful sound draws near.

The good have gone to slumber, safe and warm, ignoring whispers of the coming storm, but naughtier children, restless in the gloom, sense something ancient stalking to their room.

From Alpine peaks, where Winter holds it's reign, he comes to punish those who cause Saint pain, not Santa's list, but Krampus ledger dread, record the wicked words the naughty said.
A stench of sulfur, goat, and mountain mire, his coat is matted fur, his eyes are fire. Two twisted horns that scraped the chimney stone, a nightmare figure, hideous and alone.
Jangling chains announce his hellish stride, whip of birch prepared for human hide. The empty basket swinging from his hand, to steal the bad ones from the sleeping land.
A shiver runs with festive garland's gleam, he is the shadow lurking in the dream. He finds the house, he pauses at the door, and with a terrifying gravelly roar, he bursts inside, a creature dark and grim, the anti Santa come to claim his whim.

Whitby, the beasts are getting ready, and this year they’ll be here all weekend. 👹✨

From Friday 5th to Sunday 7th December 2025, the Whitby Krampus Run returns for its 11th year, bringing even more folklore-fuelled chaos, music, and family-friendly mayhem to the town. What started as a single procession has become a full weekend festival, with performances, processions, street theatre, and lots of chances to meet the Krampus Krew up close.

Get ready for bells, chains, drums, and the unmistakable stomp of cloven hooves as about 50 fully costumed Krampusse, drummers, and fire performers fill the streets. Inspired by Austrian folklore, the event brings the legend of Krampus to life in true Whitby style: wild, unforgettable, and full of winter energy.

This weekend also supports Whitby DAG, so please bring cash for the street collections.

Here’s what’s happening:

Friday 5th December

8:00pm — Meat and Greet the Krampus — The Royal Hotel, Whitby (Free entry)

Start the weekend by meeting the Whitby Krampus Krew, then enjoy a night of entertainment with close-up magic from The Three Wise(ish) Men, folk-horror storytelling from Seven-Headed Raven, and industrial-punk mayhem from Syd 31.

Saturday 6th December

From 11:00am — Look out for roaming Krampus, street performances, processions, and magical beasts all over town. Enjoy family activities, stalls, and official WKR merchandise all day at The Royal Hotel.

2:00 pm - 2:30pm — Children's procession — Baxtergate starting at Hetty and Betty YO21 1BW. Best hoof forward and join in the Kinder Procession as it makes its way along Baxtergate and back. Led by St. Hilda and St. Nick and kept in time to the beat of the Whitby Trommel Fiends.

4:00pm — As dusk falls, the Whitby Trommel Fiends gather at The Whalebones, drumming to welcome ancient spirits while a Viking boat arrives and beacons light up the harbour. Bring your drum or just your enthusiasm and join in the noise.

4:45pm — Mister Fox returns to Dock End with their legendary Yorkshire fire-dance performance.

7:15pm — Tengu Taiko Drummers at Whitby Brewery (Free).

Afterwards, take the Yellow Whitby Tour Bus back to The Royal Hotel for a musical moment at the Whalebones, followed by…

Sunday 7th December

1:00pm — The Reindeer Games at Cholmley House

Enjoy a brilliantly silly mix of bravery, absurdity, and festive competition, ending with the traditional annual ‘Oss Race.

As twilight falls, a lantern procession moves from Cholmley House to Whitby Brewery for the closing celebrations, featuring Petrol Hoers and a lively Oompahty to end the festival with a full folkloric flourish.
