A few years ago, I was invited onto television to speak about being proud to be British Muslim.
My family has been here for four generations. Britain is home. That sense of belonging - of holding multiple identities at once - is something I carry into everything I create.
As an illustrator working in books, I’m always looking for the human story underneath the words. The emotional truth. The tension, connection and vulnerability that make a narrative resonate with readers.
My lived experience isn’t separate from my creative practice. It is the lens through which I interpret a manuscript and translate it into image.
Hand drawn with heart means drawing from life, from memory, from observation - and using that to help stories connect with people in a real way.

My current reading is from@misterosman . The book is pulling me deeper into the art of storytelling. Each twist and secret feels like a puzzle waiting to be solved, both on the page and my sketchbook. My hand drawn cover illustrations are inspired by these moments, crafted to capture the heart of a story and draw readers in. If you love stories with hidden depths, follow along for covers that speak to the heart of the reader

Designing a cover for Noughts & Crosses was an exploration of symbolism, contrast and emotional tension.
I approached the illustration using a deliberately limited palette of black, white and red.
Black and white reference the rigid racial divide at the centre of the story — two worlds positioned in opposition, shaped by inherited power structures and prejudice.
Red is used to symbolise love, violence and sacrifice, reflecting the emotional cost of crossing the boundaries that define the characters’ lives.
Rather than illustrating a literal scene, I chose to work with silhouettes and negative space, allowing the tension between the characters to sit at the centre of the composition.
All elements were hand drawn, including the typography, so the artwork retains a human quality and sense of vulnerability that mirrors the emotional intensity of the novel.
I also designed illustrated endpapers, extending the visual language of the cover so that the story begins the moment the reader opens the book.
For me, book cover illustration is about distilling thousands of words into a single image that invites the reader into the story. Follow me for hand drawn young adult book cover illustration that speaks to the heart of the readers

Thank you for the feature. A small but meaningful moment in my illustration journey.
I recently entered the World Illustration Awards and was excited to receive a shout-out from them featuring my work.
The awards celebrate illustrators from around the world across publishing, design, and visual storytelling, so it feels incredibly encouraging to see my work included in that space.
As an illustrator, so much of the process happens quietly — sketching, refining ideas, and trying to translate stories into images that connect with people. Moments like this are a reminder that the work is being seen.
Grateful for the encouragement and inspired to keep creating.

International Women’s Day
Throughout history there have been women who refused to stay within the limits placed around them. Women who spoke when they were told to stay quiet, led when they were told to follow, and imagined a different future when the world around them could not yet see it.
This collection of portraits honours some of those voices.
From the courage of Malala Yousafzai advocating for girls’ education, to the political leadership of Benazir Bhutto, Jacinda Ardern and Margaret Thatcher, to the enduring cultural and artistic influence of Elizabeth Catlett and Betye Saar.
And to the remarkable determination of Helen Keller, who transformed what many would have seen as limitation into a life of extraordinary advocacy.
Each of these women reshaped the world in their own way.
As an illustrator, I’m always drawn to stories of people who shift the direction of history. Portraiture becomes a way of pausing and recognising the courage it takes to step beyond what already exists.
Today feels like the right moment to remember that progress is often carried forward by individuals who dare to imagine something different.

What Young Adult Fiction Taught Me
Young adult stories don’t speak down to their readers. They trust them.
They hold space for uncertainty, for questions about identity, belonging, friendship, power and choice. They remind us that growing up is not a straight line — it’s layered, emotional and often uncomfortable.
Reading young adult fiction has taught me to pay attention to those moments of tension and transformation. The quiet decisions. The feeling of standing between who you were and who you are becoming.
As an illustrator, that’s where I begin.
I listen closely to the story. I look for the emotional turning point — the thread that feels human and recognisable — and from there I translate words into imagery. Not to explain the story, but to create an invitation into it.
Young adult fiction is often described as a category.
To me, it’s a way of seeing.

I have always been drawn to stories that trust young readers with big ideas.
The ones that hold mystery, moral tension, and questions about who we are and where we belong.
Photographing a few that have stayed with me:
Northern Lights
Harry Potter
We Were Liars
Each of these carries a sense of intrigue beneath the surface. They don’t explain everything. They invite the reader to notice details, question what they see, and piece meaning together.
That’s the same approach I bring to illustration.
I read closely. I look for emotional undercurrents, for symbolism, for what is felt rather than described. Then I translate that into imagery - by hand - so the cover becomes part of the storytelling, not just packaging.
Young adult fiction, like mystery, is about discovery. My role is to create the first clue.
