Honeybees communicate the location, distance, and quality of food sources through a combination of waggle dances, pheromones, and substrate vibrations.
The waggle dance is a figure-eight movement performed by forager bees on the vertical surface of the honeycomb. During the central waggle run, the bee moves in a straight line while shaking its abdomen. The direction of the waggle run indicates the location of the food source relative to the sun, while the duration of the run communicates the distance. Longer waggle runs represent greater distances, and the intensity of the dance reflects the quality of the food source.
In addition to the waggle dance, honeybees use pheromones to enhance communication within the colony. Forager bees release chemical signals that are transferred to other bees, providing information about the presence of food and influencing behaviours such as alarm responses and queen succession. Scientists have identified at least 15 different pheromones, each serving a distinct role in colony coordination.
Honeybees also communicate through substrate vibrations transmitted across the honeycomb. Vibrational signals, including piping, tooting, and stop signals, influence the behaviour of other bees by conveying information about foraging, potential threats, and other colony activities. These signals complement the waggle dance and pheromones, creating multiple channels of communication.
Although the waggle dance has an instinctive basis, honeybees refine their performance through observation and interaction with experienced foragers. This learning process improves the accuracy and effectiveness of their communication.
By integrating visual movements, chemical signals, and vibrational cues, honeybees have evolved a highly sophisticated communication system. This enables colonies to rapidly exchange information, optimise foraging efficiency, respond effectively to environmental changes, and maintain effective colony coordination.
