We’ve become aware that Meltham’s cashpoint phone box at the bottom of Wessenden Head Road / Holmfirth Road is being decommissioned. BT is proposing to remove the cash machine and the red box that houses it, citing low usage.
There is still time to have your say — the consultation closes on 19th June. If you feel strongly about this, you can also contact your local councillors.
If the phone and cash machine are removed, should we as a community adopt what’s left of the red box — and how could it best be used?
In Helme and Netherthong, old kiosks have been lovingly repurposed as local book exchanges — a simple idea that keeps stories circulating and neighbours connected. Helme’s box goes one step further and is fitted with a defibrillator, showing how these landmarks can support both everyday wellbeing and emergency response.
What do you think Meltham’s could be repurposed as? Drop your ideas in the comments (practical, creative, or community-focused).
