"People who make aren’t really very bright, and that’s why they work with their hands". Wow - what a ridiculous stereotype that must be eradicated. So the legions of knitters, stitchers, textile artists, weavers, wood carvers etc are "thick"? Really? "People who make" built this country, built this world. Crafting with your hands is excellent for cognitive health and we need all these old skills to be passed on and learned by the TikTok generation, and schools & parents need to be encouraging it. There is no excuse that "you don't know how to do it" - YouTube is in the pal of your hand with millions of tutorials, and there are local heritage charities that are in desperate need of younger blood.
If we don't 'save our skills' we will lose them forever — and that would be a crying shame, says Corinne Julius.
