Established in 2000, 1st For Fabrics Ltd is a family-run retailer, selling all types of fabrics to a huge variety of customers. Based in Benton, Newcastle upon Tyne, our vibrant store has hundreds of fabrics, trims and notions to choose from, for both dressmaking and furnishing projects.

Channelling sunday sewing vibes …

For me there’s nothing more relaxing than a chilled Sunday sewing session.

I stick a film on for the kids, made a cup of tea and have half an hour (a little more if I’m lucky!) in front of my machine.

In those moments, everything else melts away.

Tomorrow’s to-do list can wait. Chores are paused at least for a little while.

Well, hello!

There’s been a little flurry of new folk passing by our little corner of Instagram so by way of a quick reintroduction:

I’m Kayleigh and alongside my folks, Julie and Brian, and my brother, Jay, we run a beautiful fabric shop in the North East of England called 1st For Fabrics.

We source gorgeous dressmaking fabrics for home sewists and my job is to waft them about and tell you all of the wonderful projects they’d be suited to.

Our website is jam packed with not only fabrics but haberdashery, patterns and notions too - with more being added all the time.

When you order from us, your fabrics are lovingly packed up with care and attention and topped off with a wee personal note.

We’re in the midst of closing our current shop to move to a gorgeous new studio where we plan to open a sewing school early next year.

Well, this month has been quite a year 🫠

On the 1st of August we made a big announcement and everything that came after that has been amplified 10 fold.
We’ve had our busiest month by FAR this year and we are so thankful (and so tired 😂).

I don’t feel like I’ve added much to the website recently as time has been so squeezed, but what I have put up has sold like hotcakes. Ironically, a lot of fabrics have sold out before we’ve got them onto the shop shelves. But hey - I’ve been told dozens of times this month that online fabric shopping just wont work 🤷🏻‍♀️

Here’s to the craziness that September will bring 🥂✌️

It’s happening…

Moving into a new studio half the size of our humongous shop means we can’t take it all with us.

Moving sale starts in store on Tuesday 1st September. Fabrics from £2 per metre, trims from 20p per metre.

Sale items will be added to the website throughout September - follow along on our stories for the up to date bargains!

Time for the SALE!

Moving into a studio roughly half the size of our current shop means we can’t take EVERYTHING with us.
We have spent this past week doing a thorough audit and making decisions on what will come with us and what we need to put into a moving sale.

Our new studio will be dressmaking focused, so if you’re popping into our current shop next week you will find the home furnishings and upholstery reduced as well as a lot of the cotton poplins, organza, satins, lace, trims, habby and a lot of dressmaking stock which is non repeatable/discontinued. More in-store sale info to follow.

Don’t worry online pals - we’re not leaving you out! I’ve been sneakily putting a few things into the SALE section of the website and each weekend before we move I will drop a right bargain.

This week it is our beautiful Stretch Linen Viscose - such a fab workhorse of a fabric, I’m so sad the supplier is finishing this line. It’s great for trousers, dresses, tops and more. It lends itself equally well to smart workwear or for more casual garments too.
