🚪🇮🇪 The Irish Cottage Half Door – A Little Door with a Big History!

Ever wondered why traditional Irish cottages had those charming half doors? We even kept the same traditional touch on our own home 🏡

They weren't just for decoration!

🐔 They kept wandering hens and farm animals outside.

🔥 They helped fresh air circulate around the cottage and its turf fire.

☀️ They let extra daylight into otherwise dark kitchens.

☕ And perhaps most importantly, they were the perfect spot for a good old chat with the neighbours!

Long before social media, the Irish half door was where local news travelled, stories were shared, and a five-minute conversation could easily turn into an hour. 😂

It's one of those simple features of old Ireland that tells us so much about how our ancestors lived.

🎃 HALLOWEEN'S IRISH ROOTS 🇮🇪

Long before pumpkins, trick-or-treating and plastic skeletons, our Irish ancestors were celebrating something far more mysterious… Samhain! 🔥

Over 2,000 years ago, Samhain marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter. It was believed to be a time when the veil between the living and the spirit world was at its thinnest. 👻

And those Halloween traditions we know today?

🎃 We carved TURNIPS before pumpkins!
🔥 Bonfires lit up the Irish countryside.
👻 Costumes and disguises have roots in ancient traditions.
🍞 Barmbrack could supposedly predict your future!

When Irish emigrants crossed the Atlantic, they took many of these traditions with them, helping shape the Halloween celebrated around the world today.

Not bad for a little island! ☘️
