A recent job in Plymouth highlighted something we come across more often than you might think.
The property had a dual RCD consumer unit, but the two RCDs were different brands and different types. One was an older Type AC device and the other was from a different manufacturer altogether. In fact, there were three different brands of protective devices installed within the same consumer unit.
Whilst the installation was still operational, mixing manufacturers and older protection devices isn't something we recommend.
As part of the upgrade, we replaced both RCDs with new Type A RCDs from the same manufacturer as the rest of the consumer unit, creating a more consistent and up-to-date installation.
Why does this matter?
Modern homes contain far more electronic equipment than they did when many consumer units were originally installed. EV chargers, washing machines, induction hobs, LED lighting, computers, televisions and phone chargers can all create electrical characteristics that older Type AC RCDs were never specifically designed to deal with.
Type A RCDs provide improved protection for many of the electrical devices found in today's homes and help bring the installation in line with current standards and recommendations.
It's one of those upgrades that most homeowners never see, but it's the hidden safety features behind the scenes that help protect your home and family.

BIG CHANGES HAPPENING IN BOVEY TRACEY!

Sometimes the electrical work starts long before the new bathroom suite arrives... 👀
We're currently working in Bovey Tracey where our customer is completely reconfiguring their upstairs layout to create a much larger bathroom. With walls moving and rooms being reshaped, we've been called in to relocate cables, move switch positions and install new electrical feeds ready for the next stage of the renovation.
This is one of those jobs where planning ahead makes all the difference. Getting the electrical installation right at this stage helps avoid costly alterations later and ensures everything is exactly where it needs to be once the plasterboard, tiling and decorating are complete.

⚡ Garage Consumer Unit Upgrade Completed in Bovey Tracey ⚡
Not all electrical upgrades are exciting to look at, but some are incredibly important when it comes to safety.
We recently installed a new Proteus consumer unit in a customer's garage in Bovey Tracey. The existing setup no longer provided the level of protection expected from a modern installation, so it was time for an upgrade.
The new consumer unit includes individual RCBO protection and surge protection, helping to protect both the electrical installation and anything plugged into it.
Why does this matter?
If a fault develops on one circuit, it can often be isolated without affecting everything else. It also provides improved protection against electric shock and can help reduce the risk of electrical fires.
