Important Notice – £20 Banknote Vigilance
Unfortunately, over the past week we have had a customer pay with a counterfeit £20 note. This may not have been intentional, and unfortunately we have been unable to identify which event the note was presented at. However, we wanted to make all organisers aware so that everyone can remain extra vigilant.
Our team has been carefully checking notes, including the Braille markings and changing graphics. On this occasion, the counterfeit note managed to slip through our checks, with the colouring/shade of the note being the feature that ultimately identified it.
As a result, we will be taking extra care when accepting £20 notes. During particularly busy periods, we may ask customers to use an alternative payment method, such as smaller denomination notes or card payment.
Where a card payment is under £5.00, we will waive the usual card payment fee in these circumstances.
If a counterfeit note is presented
If we believe a note is counterfeit, we are entitled to retain the note and will notify the relevant event organiser. Where appropriate, a description of the person who presented the note may also be provided to the organiser to assist with any investigation.
Unfortunately, this is a loss that we are unable to recover ourselves, and the counterfeit note will still need to be investigated by the Bank of England.
Please also be vigilant with cash withdrawals
We would also encourage everyone to check £20 notes received from cash machines or other sources. If you are unsure about a note, your bank can check it for you and, where you can demonstrate that the note came directly from the bank or cash machine, they may be able to reimburse you.
