Every piece of wood boasts its own unique pattern and texture, and these distinguishing features fundamentally influence my design and making decisions. The long piece of ash shown in this photo is a fascinating example of the complexity found in a single piece of wood. Notice the rippling patterns running perpendicular to the grain, a result of moisture imbalance where one side of the wood swelled more than the other, or the twisting, irregular fibre of knots where a branch once formed. These beautiful characteristics, far from being flaws, present technical challenges—such as tear-out during carving, unpredictable movement, or difficult cutting formation—that must be overcome. For me, these features are not impediments but opportunities to adapt the design, celebrate the material’s history, and ensure the finished piece is truly special.
