Timeless Curiosity

Timeless Curiosity Hand-crafted, vintage style, Steampunk inspired, bespoke jewellery and Zentangle-inspired art cards. Instagram

Timeless Curiosity presents a range of Steampunk inspired resin-set jewellery and mixed media gifts. All items are hand crafted by Nikki England in my home in Nottingham, UK. I began experimenting with resin and cogs when recovering from my second hip replacement operation in January 2014. To start with, it was a hobby shared with my two daughters (Jasmine and Lily) to fill time until I was able t

o return to work. However, all three of us enjoyed it so much that we had soon created more jewellery than we could possibly hope to wear ourselves or give to friends and, in April 2014, we had our first stall and created Timeless Curiosity. I am still enjoying playing with recycled cogs and gears, vintage sheet music, glitter, charms and resin to create Timeless Curiosity jewellery, although the girls have now moved on to pursue their own lives and careers. I find the intricate nature of the watch cogs and gears both beautiful and fascinating and enjoy combining them with colour or vintage sheet music to create layers of interest within individual pieces. I like to showcase these ‘retired’ workings in a way that indicates their previous functional lives whilst they are set in a permanent, unmoving, timeless, casing of clear doming Ice Resin. Whilst inspired by Steampunk (a sub-genre which can, superficially, be described as Victorian science fiction), I hope Timeless Curiosity jewellery can be enjoyed by anybody who appreciates the attraction and intricacies of these tiny timepiece mechanisms. Feeling defeated.

Unfortunately, I will not be at day 2 of the Ashbourne Art Trail today. The load in to St Oswald's Primary School yesterday morning was too much for me. After spending the day in pain, I made the difficult decision to pack down and leave.

I have psoriatic arthritis, alongside boring old osteoarthritis and joint hypermobility. I also had my first hip replacement aged 37 thanks to a delightful condition called synovial chondromatosis, so I'm not new to this chronic pain lark. However, in all my years of selling at markets, I have never previously had to leave early because of my health. (I did once cancel an event due to COVID, but that doesn't count). I'm the sort of stall holder that stays to the end, even when the market is dire, so leaving a busy and vibrant event was hard. My world shrinks ever smaller.

To be honest, I realised when I first arrived at the venue that the load in was beyond my capabilities and should have left before setting up but I didn't want to 'give in' to my conditions. Lesson learnt. (Or is it?) As a result, I will spend today lying in a darkened room, regretting my life decisions and trying to work out what I CAN actually do

I hope everyone going to Ashbourne today has a lovely day, sorry I won't be with you.

I've recently discovered Procreate on iPad as a way of colouring my original pen and ink drawings. It's good fun but I don't think I'm ready to give up my paint brush just yet. However, sometimes I'm reluctant to paint drawings because I like the black and white version of the original. With Zina's portrait, Lily wanted the original unpainted but I've been able to add a little colour digitally. Best of both worlds. Procreate also creates an exportable time lapse so I can share my first attempt of using it.

Anyone else use digital tools to colour their own and ink drawings?

I'll be exhibiting a new selection of my artwork in the PDSA shop from 6th to 14th June. I like to create new designs each year and this year I've been working on a few new pieces to fit the shop. What could they be?

The fabulous Sherwood Art Week is rapidly approaching. I've been busy working on something new for art in shops (more info coming soon) when you'll be able to admire artworks in many Sherwood shop windows (from 5th to 15th June). Look out for my art in the PDSA charity shop and also find me at the Secret Garden craft fair on 6th June.
