School uniforms hold SO many memories 🥹🎓

Today I’ve been turning these much-loved school jumpers into keepsake pillows — keeping all those little details that tell the story of their school years. ❤️

For these particular pillows, Mum wanted to be involved in the layout, so I photographed a few different arrangements before cutting and sent them over for her to choose from. She picked this one… then it was over to me ✂️🧵

Just a little note — sending different layout mock-ups isn't part of my standard keepsake service. Usually I’ll use my experience to choose the layout that makes the best use of your clothing, badges and special details. After 10 years of making keepsakes, you can safely leave that bit with me. 🥰

But I know sometimes you might want a little more involvement in the design, so I'm considering adding a design consultation/mock-up option for those who would like to choose their layout before I start cutting.

And this feels like the perfect week to share these, with children heading back to school. 🎒

Whether yours is just starting Reception, moving up another year or has already left school behind… keep the uniform.

One day, you might be very glad you did. ❤️

Do you still have any of your children's old school uniform tucked away somewhere? 👇

There is no correct way to grieve. 🤍

Over the years, my work has introduced me to so many people at very different stages of loss.

Some contact me within days or weeks because they desperately want something they can hold.

Others have kept a bag of clothing safely tucked away for five, ten or even twenty years before they feel ready to open it.

I've learned that grief doesn't follow a timetable.

It doesn't matter how long it's been. It doesn't matter whether you're grieving a person or a much-loved pet. And you don't have to “move on” just because the rest of the world seems to have done so.

Sometimes keeping something tangible — a piece of clothing, a blanket, a handwritten note, even a familiar smell — can mean an enormous amount.

So on National Grief Awareness Day, this isn't a sales post.

It's simply a little reminder that however grief looks for you today, there's no deadline for missing someone. 🤍

Some clothes are just too special to throw away. 🤎

Maybe they belonged to someone you miss.
Maybe they’re the tiny baby clothes you can’t quite believe ever fitted.
Maybe it’s a school jumper that marks the end of an era.
Or perhaps it’s a blanket that still reminds you of a much-loved pet. 🐾

Whatever the story, there’s a reason they’re still tucked safely away.

For over 10 years, I’ve been turning those sentimental fabrics into keepsakes that can come back out of the cupboard and become part of your home — bears, pups, cushions and little keepsakes made from the pieces that matter most.

So yes… if you have that bag of clothes you can’t bring yourself to part with, the algorithm probably did get this one right. 😂🤎

What’s in your “I’m never throwing that away” bag?

10,000 Etsy sales… 🥹 I still can't quite believe I'm writing that!

That woman sitting behind a little market stall selling bows for £2 had absolutely NO idea where her sewing machine was going to take her. 😂

There have been lots of different products along the way, plenty of ideas that worked, a fair few that definitely didn't 🤣, late nights, busy Christmases and more fabric than any one woman reasonably needs to own!

But one order at a time, my little handmade business grew.

So when I spotted that my Etsy shop had reached 10,000 sales, I had to take a screenshot.

Then I checked eRank and discovered Momma Bear Creates is currently in the top 1.4% of Etsy shops 😳

And while I was doing THAT… another order came in.

10,001. 😂❤️

And of course, 10,000 is only my Etsy sales. Over the years there have also been all the lovely customers who've found me through my website, markets, schools, social media and word of mouth. I couldn't even tell you what the real number is now! 🥹

But the number I'm most proud of isn't really the 10,000.

It's the thousands of people who've trusted me with their precious clothes, their memories and their stories. The baby clothes, school uniforms, favourite jumpers, dressing gowns and much-loved pet blankets that have passed across my sewing table over the years.

I don't think I'll ever take that trust for granted.

So I'm allowing myself a teeny tiny bang of my own drum today 🥁😂 — but mostly I just want to say…

Thank you.

For every order, review, recommendation, comment, share and person who's followed my little business along the way.

From that little market stall to my workshop today…

What a bloomin' journey. ❤️🐻

Have you been here since the early days, or have you found me more recently? I'd love to know ❤️

Love always,
Jules x

“When should I have a memory bear made?”

The truth is, there really is no right answer. ❤️

Over the years I've made memorial keepsakes almost immediately after someone has passed away, including bears that were made to be given to loved ones at a funeral.

But I've also received clothes that have been carefully stored away for years because their owner simply wasn't ready to part with them before then.

I'm actually much more like the second person. 🙋‍♀️

For me, sentimental things can take years before I'm ready to cut into them — and after 10 years of making keepsakes, I've learnt that everyone is completely different.

And it isn't just bereavement keepsakes.

Some mums send me those precious first sleepsuits almost as soon as baby has outgrown them. Some choose a keepsake for their first birthday.

And I've also made keepsakes as wedding gifts, from childhood clothes their mums had lovingly kept safe for all those years. 🥹

There is no deadline.

Too soon for one person might feel exactly right for another.

So whether those clothes have been sitting in a bag for two weeks, two years or twenty years, you haven't missed your moment.

The right time to have a keepsake made is when it feels right for you. ❤️

Have you got special clothes tucked away that you're not quite ready to do anything with yet?

Apparently today is National Don’t Give Up Day ❤️

And after 10 years of running Momma Bear Creates, I think I’m qualified to say there have been plenty of moments when giving up would have been the easier option.

I was once told I couldn't make a living from sewing.

And to be fair, there have definitely been days over the years when I wondered if they were right 😂

I've juggled other jobs, had quiet months, made mistakes, changed what I sell, learnt new techniques, battled with social media and wondered more than once whether it was all worth it.

But I kept sewing.

And somewhere along the way, this little idea became a business that's allowed me to turn thousands of precious pieces of clothing, blankets and memories into something their owners can hold onto. ❤️

I think I've learnt that not giving up doesn't mean stubbornly carrying on in exactly the same way.

Sometimes it means changing direction.

Sometimes it means slowing down.

Sometimes it means admitting something isn't working and trying something else.

And sometimes it simply means showing up again tomorrow.

10 years later, I'm still here, still sewing from my little workshop at the bottom of the garden.

And I'm rather glad I didn't give up. 🧸❤️

If you're in a season where things feel harder than you'd hoped, perhaps this is your little reminder today:

Keep going. You don't know yet what your story will look like 10 years from now.

This is how I add a real paw print to fabric 🐾 — and after years of practice, I’ve got my method down!

My customer sends me a photo or scan of the paw print, then I take it into Canva, remove the background and resize it so it fits perfectly onto my pattern piece.

Then comes the MOST important bit… preparing the fabric.

I usually use 100% white cotton (although I’ve had great results with pale colours too). The fabric is treated with a specialist solution which helps stop the ink from running and gives the print longevity.

Once it’s completely dry, I add medium-weight iron-on interfacing to the back and cut the fabric to A4 size.

It needs to be perfectly flat, with the interfacing completely adhered — because then comes the clever bit…

I pop it into my printer just like a normal sheet of paper! 😳

Once printed, I press it to help seal the ink, then I can cut out my pattern piece and sew with it as normal.

And it’s not just paw prints 🐾

I use this same technique to preserve handwriting, nose prints and even photographs in my keepsakes.

A tiny detail that can make something handmade feel even more personal. ❤️

Sometimes it’s the things that look ordinary to everyone else that mean the absolute world to us. 🤍

A blanket. A little keepsake. A photograph. A handwritten note telling me about the dog who was so very loved.

When these arrived at my workshop, I knew they weren’t just things.

They held memories.

And my job was to take something that already meant so much and turn it into a little pup that could be held close again. 🐾

After 10 years of making memory keepsakes, I still never forget the trust that comes with someone sending me something completely irreplaceable.

It’s one of the loveliest — and biggest — parts of what I do.

Because sometimes “just a blanket” is anything but. 🤍

If you’re a sentimental soul who keeps the things that hold a thousand memories, you’re in the right place.

Love always,
Jules x
