Not every flower in this garden is trying to tell Alice who she should be.

The Tiger Lily and Dandelion aren’t seducing her with promises. They’re not sizing her up. They’re not shrinking either.

They’re just wildly, joyfully, unapologetically themselves. Taking up space. Loving each other. Having too much fun to care about impossible standards.

The dandelion is one of the most resilient things that grows. Most people look right past it. But it carries medicine. It always has.

Maybe their fragrance drifts over to Alice. Maybe she catches it for just a moment.

And maybe that’s enough to help her remember who she actually is.

She was just following a bread and butterfly. Her own compass. Her own North Star.

But put her in the garden and everything shifts.

Suddenly she’s looking past the butterfly. Listening to the Rose’s promises. The Iris sizing her up behind her back. The measuring stick already raised.

We all know this moment. When we stop trusting our own compass and start trying to earn someone else’s standard.

But Alice doesn’t stay long.

She remembers who she is. Stomps right out of that garden. Because feeling small was never the truth of who she was.

There is so much more to her. And when she remembered that, she became unstoppable.

So do you.

These ones didn’t push their way to the front.

They tucked themselves into the shade while the Rose made her promises and the Iris wielded her measuring stick. And they made a quiet decision most of us recognize immediately.

Maybe the big dream isn’t worth the risk. Maybe this small hidden spot is actually the safer place to live.

We all have this part inside us. The part that would rather shrink than be seen. Rather hide than be judged. Rather stay small than try and fail in front of everyone.

It doesn’t feel like much. We’re not really seen for what we truly are in the shadows.

But at least we’re safe.

Right?

I was somewhere between six and nine when my stepdad told me we were going to visit grandma’s house at Disneyland.

I probably should have questioned the tombstones.

I’ve never really minded ghosts though. I was already the kid talking to fairies and noticing people others couldn’t see. When I lived in Brooklyn I used to walk through Greenwood Cemetery for fun because it was quiet and honestly one of my favorite places in the city.

I think we make more of spooky things than they actually are.

My favorite part of the Haunted Mansion was always the ghosts celebrating a birthday party. Even after everything, they still get to celebrate. I thought that was beautiful then. I still do.

Today I’m packing up a piece from my Haunted Gallery collection for someone who felt that same thing.

She’s already decided you’re not enough for her garden. And she hasn’t even heard your name yet.

Madame Iris is the inner critic. The measuring stick you didn’t build but somehow agreed to be measured by. Picking you apart before you’ve even begun.

This is the other side of perfectionism. The Rose promises beauty and harmony if you just get it right. The Iris reminds you that you never will.

We all have one living somewhere in our heads. Remember, just because she’s loud doesn’t mean she’s right.

They’ve been arguing since before Alice arrived. They’ll be arguing long after she leaves.

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum are the noise. The circular overthinking. The pointless self-talk that pulls your attention away from everything that actually matters.

You can’t outsmart noise. Logic doesn’t work on it.

So Alice does something harder and more powerful. She simply walks away. No need to solve the argument that refuses to be solved. Just refuse to keep participating.

Energy grows where focus goes.

She doesn’t ask for your attention. She just blooms and lets you draw your own conclusions.

Madame Rose is the promise. The vision of what life could look like if you just did it right. Got it together. Became enough.

Perfection seduces us with beauty and harmony. It whispers that all of this could be yours. But only if you meet its standards.

Will you measure up? Is it even possible?

Like Alice, we all have to decide that for ourselves.
