A familiar Victorian form — until you look at the column.

This late Victorian mahogany tilt-top occasional table, dating to circa 1890–1910, takes the traditional English tripod table and gives it a rather unexpected architectural detail.

The oval top and carved cabriole tripod base are elegant in themselves, but it is the extraordinary open reed column that really sets the table apart. Slender carved mahogany elements run down the central shaft before opening out into a bulbous, almost cage-like form above the base. They are decorative rather than structural, surrounding a solid central support and creating a wonderful interplay of light, shadow and negative space.

It is an inventive late 19th-century interpretation of a much earlier Georgian furniture form. The original brass snap catch allows the oval top to tilt vertically when required — practical historically, but also revealing the construction underneath.

At 61 cm wide, its proportions make it particularly useful beside an armchair or sofa as a wine, lamp or occasional table. In a contemporary interior, that sculptural column gives it enough presence to stand almost as an object in its own right.

📌 Save this one for the column detail — it is a fascinating variation on the traditional tripod table.

Colours

A beautifully balanced North-West Persian runner, woven across a warm ivory ground with fourteen hooked lozenge medallions that unfold in a gentle visual rhythm along its length. Each medallion is subtly varied in colour and internal drawing, while soft terracotta reds, muted blues, celadon greens, ochres and carefully placed touches of deep indigo create an unusually calm and harmonious composition. Rather than repeating mechanically, the slight variations reveal the individual judgement of the village weaver, giving the runner a quiet sense of movement and authenticity.

Stand back... and everything comes together.

Seen as a whole, this Late 19th Century Gujarati hall bench reveals why traditional craftsmanship deserves to be appreciated from every angle.

The architectural gallery back provides visual rhythm, the original terracotta-painted legs introduce warmth and regional identity, while the broad hardwood plank seat anchors the entire composition with quiet confidence.

Every material has aged honestly. The timber carries a deep natural patina, the forged iron has softened through time and the original painted finish still speaks of the workshop where it was first created over 120 years ago.

Placed beneath a large mirror, in an entrance hall or as a statement piece within a layered interior, it offers more than seating.

It brings architecture, craftsmanship and history into everyday life.

📌 Save this if you believe furniture should tell a story as well as serve a purpose.

Why does this bench feel so balanced?

It’s not accidental.

The repeated rhythm of the turned hardwood balusters creates a sense of order that our eyes naturally enjoy. The evenly spaced uprights, horizontal iron straps and carefully positioned brass rosettes work together almost like the façade of a traditional building.

This architectural approach is one of the defining characteristics of Gujarati craftsmanship during the late nineteenth century. Every repeated form creates harmony without making the piece feel rigid or formal.

Combined with the mellow hardwood seat and surviving original painted details, the result is furniture that feels both practical and quietly sculptural.

Great furniture isn’t simply well made.

It’s beautifully composed.

Some makers carved decoration. Others built it into the structure.

This Late 19th Century Gujarati hardwood hall bench demonstrates a different philosophy of design. Instead of relying on elaborate carving, its character comes from construction itself.

Rows of hand-turned balusters create a gallery that resembles architectural balustrading, while hand-forged iron straps strengthen the frame and decorative brass rosettes transform functional fixings into ornament.

Dating from around 1880–1900, every material has a purpose. Nothing feels excessive, yet every element contributes to the bench’s unmistakable identity.

It’s a reminder that the finest vernacular furniture often achieves its beauty through thoughtful engineering rather than unnecessary embellishment.

The time worn details you don’t see at first

The best craftsmanship is often the least obvious.

At first glance, this late Victorian pine marble top bedside cupboard appears beautifully simple. Look a little closer and you’ll discover the details that reveal the hand of a thoughtful cabinetmaker.

Dating to around 1890–1910, it is constructed throughout in solid pine and retains its original Carrara marble top, where the cool veining of the stone contrasts beautifully with the warmth of the timber. A hand-cut dovetailed drawer, recessed panelled cupboard door and mellow age-developed patina all reflect the quiet confidence of well-made late nineteenth-century furniture.

The detail that caught my eye, however, lies in what you don’t immediately see. Rather than conventional external hinges, the door is fitted with concealed brass pivot hinges, creating an uninterrupted front elevation while allowing the door to open with remarkable elegance. Inside, the original sprung catch and raised, fielded door panel continue the story of practical craftsmanship executed to a higher standard than many surviving examples.

Its restrained proportions allow it to work effortlessly as an antique bedside cupboard, hallway cabinet or compact side table, equally at home in period interiors or contemporary spaces where natural materials and honest craftsmanship are appreciated.
