Charity shop read of the week:
Dr Nell Ward, consultant ecologist and lady of the manor, is hosting her best friend’s society wedding at her country estate when a furor erupts. The bride’s family think the groom is a gold digger. The groom’s family think the bride's family are snobs and it all kicks off mid-ceremony at the estate’s chapel. It only gets worse when right in the middle of the festivities, things are called to a halt by the thunk of the groom’s body crashing two floors down into lobby.

Nell has to deal with a hysterical best friend, disgruntled family members and her own strained love triangle whilst bodies just keep turning up in her house. Oh how she longs to be back with the bats!

Fab cosy crime. An easy read full of loveable characters and a sense of rotation at the inconvenience which is so undeniably British it still makes me chuckle. Worth a read if this is your bag.

One from the shelves...
Margaret Small is just 6 years old when she is ‘vanished’ from her grandmother’s home and taken to the hospital for those with mental deficiencies. This book is her looking back on her life and trying to make sense of the various twists and turns it has taken. With the kindness of her support worker, Wayne, she is empowered to solve a mystery which has is haunting her.

It’s a beautiful book, sensitively written by someone with experience of working in the field and supported by those who once lived in the asylums and homes for the mentally incapable. Worth reading.

💚 More Than Just a Shop 💚

When people think of a charity shop, they often picture rails of great-quality clothes, hidden treasures, friendly faces and a place to donate unwanted items.

What many don't see is everything happening behind the scenes to make that possible.

Our shop team and volunteers wear many hats every single day. From sorting donations and creating eye-catching displays to supporting customers, training volunteers, running fundraising activities and building connections in the local community, no two days are ever the same!

✨ We help give pre-loved items a second life.
✨ We create welcoming volunteering opportunities.
✨ We support people to build confidence, skills and friendships.
✨ We raise vital funds for our charity's work.
✨ We provide a friendly face and listening ear for many people who walk through our doors.

None of this would be possible without the incredible support of our customers, donors and volunteers. Every purchase, every donation and every hour volunteered helps make a real difference.

What are your best tips for finding the best bits in the charity shop? We'll go first...

1. New stock goes out everyday, throughout the day, so be sure to check back regularly.

2. Don't wait to buy - there's only 1 of most items so when it's gone, it's gone.

3. Shop by quality not label... If you can spot a quality garment by a smaller or unknown brand it will often be cheaper than a big name brand which might not last as well.

4. Be nice to the volunteers! They will help you find the good stuff and if you have something you collect they will happily keep an eye out. If you really want to get on their good side, biscuits work well!

5. Do price check online - We always try to give you a bargain and we don't mind you checking!

6. Don't be afraid to try other sizes, particularly in women's clothing, the sizes can vary wildly between brands but we can only go by what the label says when hanging.

7. Be creative - A necklace can become a belt, curtains can be made into cushions and clothes can be tailored, dyed or totally remade into something else - the opportunities are limitless.

8. If you are a reseller, let us know. Contrary to popular belief, we don't dislike you! We do often have things which we know won't sell in the shop but which might be suitable for you though! Speak up, build a relationship with us and maybe we can help each other out!

9. Donate! The better donations we have, the better quality we can put out which attracts more quality donations from others. So if you want to see good stuff from others - donate good stuff you no longer need and get the cycle going!

10. Be kind. Charity shop karma is real and the gods of thrift always smile on those who smile on others!
