THERAPIST TIP TUESDAY 🤍
“Calm down.”
I think most of us have said it when our child is overwhelmed…I know I have.
But when a child is already experiencing a big emotion, telling them to calm down doesn’t necessarily help them know how to do it.
Sometimes, what they need first is connection.
Try:
🤍 “I’m here.”
🤍 “Let’s take a minute together.”
🤍 “Tell me what you need when you’re ready.”
It doesn’t mean we don’t hold boundaries or that every behaviour is okay. It simply means helping them feel calmer and more regulated before we try to talk about what happened.
Sometimes a small change in how we respond can make a really big difference.
Save this for one of those big feeling moments 🤍
