December’s daily ditty.
Are opals unlucky?
We often hear people say they wouldn’t buy opals as they are unlucky....when you ask them why, they have no idea as to why.
Well...as with other less hard stones, there is always the ability to scuff or crack an opal.
Gemstones are rated by hardness on the Moh’s scale, with diamond being the hardest, and talc the softest. We have no talc jewellery, naturally. 😉
Opals rate at 6, but as a silicon dioxide and water based thing, they can dry out over time if left in inappropriate places.
So, bearing in mind that opals are created within rock fissures, we would say they are tough old creatures, plus they can be exquisitely beautiful and unique....so go ahead and enjoy them in jewellery, just store them away from other jewellery where they can get bashed about, or direct heat or light sources. Also, please don’t bathe in them, swim in them or put them in ANY chemicals.
