It’s Royal Ascot day! All that planning of the outfits, logistics, dress code and the all important picnic come to the fore this week. I’m so looking forward to seeing all the outfits and particularly the hats for 2026. But if it’s how to wear your hat that’s holding your excitement back, here is a step-by-step guide of how to wear a hat with an elastic. Hat elastics are by far the comfiest and most effortless way to wear a cocktail hat but they are often feared and misunderstood. Ideally the hat elastic would be similar colour to your hair but don’t worry if it’s not because it shouldn’t be seen anyway. Put your hair into a top knot (not essential but it makes it easier). You should sit the hat on the front of your head hold it with one hand, pull the elastic down under your hair to the nape of the neck. The elastic should essentially run from the hat, behind your ears and to the nape of the neck. If you can still see the elastic at the top of the hat before it reaches the hair, a light back comb of that part of your hair should cover it up fairly easily. The biggest rule- don’t put the elastic under your chin! Enjoy Ascot if you’re going and if not enjoy watching all the outfits from afar!
