New Earthy Stuff episode tonight at 7pm on Lichfield Radio & Echo 📻

Jess had the pleasure of sitting down with Kate Copeland-Rhodes, who is the Chief Public Affairs Officer at Support Staffordshire, where she leads on strategic communications, sustainability, partnerships and place-based collaboration.

She’s the founder of The Globe Group 🌎 — who have merged with Support Staffordshire , bringing more than 20 years of experience across project management, communications, sustainability and environmental behaviour change.

They chatted about how the Globe Group began and the wonderful merger with Support Staffordshire and all the impactful things that they do. There’s lots of discussion on sustainability too, with some simple tips for individuals and businesses to make a real difference. And of course they discussed the Midlands Climate Expo and Sustainability Conference happening later this month, on Friday 25 September, 9:30 to 4. Tickets are free, and there’s a fireside chat with Konnie Huq.

Kate’s passion for sustainability was clear from the first moments of the chat, and the work she has been doing is no doubt having a positive impact on the planet. 🌍

give sportswear a second life. They started in March 2021 with three tubs of kit and a simple idea: getting active shouldn’t cost the earth, or cost you the earth. They now have two lockups’ worth of donated sportswear and have put more than 22,000 items back into circulation through resale, redistribution, repair and repurposing. That is nearly 4,000kg of kit kept out of landfill and an estimated 105,000kg of CO2e saved. ♻️

As a Community Interest Company, their mission is to make sport more accessible for everyone while supporting people who need it along the way.

The waste side matters too. Most sportswear is synthetic, so once it hits landfill it is going absolutely nowhere for a very long time.

We are looking for contributors for September

The theme for September is : Re-Imagine

Welcome to 2030! Imagining a future we would like to be part of...

For our next climate cafe in September we've been thinking about how we can play with the idea of re-imagining - how can we make space to see and do things in a completely different way?

We are inviting artists/contributors to run a workshop from the year 2030 - running an activity that explores a change that they would like to see.

Maybe our relationship with nature has completely shifted

Perhaps our streets/towns/spaces are used in a completely different way

Maybe your sewing workshops/design business is booming since they banned the manufacture of new clothing at the end of 2027!

We'd love to hear your ideas for workshops exploring a 2030 you'd like to be part of…

We’d love to hear from artists with an idea to bring these themes to life, in any art form.

We’re also interested to hear from non-artists about any ideas around these themes.

We’re also keen to hear from you if you would like to bring a repair skill or other skill to share at one of our climate cafes

What a joy it was to sit down with local hero, James Lewis today for the Earthy Stuff podcast on Lichfield Radio & Echo 🎥

We’re all about striving for a greener, kinder future, and we love talking to people doing amazing things in sustainability or making the world better through sheer kindness. Well, James is the embodiment of that second one.

He has raised over £100,000 for St Giles Hospice through some truly extraordinary challenges. Including his latest, which saw him dribble a football all the way from Africa to Rugeley. Over 2,000 miles. With a ball at his feet. ⚽️

Sarah takes everyday discarded materials and turns them into beautiful, wildly varied pieces, from intricate light installations to large-scale sculptures. Proof that "rubbish" is very much a matter of opinion. ♻️

🌒 Who’s made their own eclipse viewer for tonight? #

Tonight the UK gets its best partial solar eclipse in decades — around 90% of the Sun tucked behind the Moon. Starts about 6pm, peaks around 7:10pm, done by 8ish. Look west, and pick somewhere with a clear low horizon.

We’ve been having far too much fun making upcycled viewers out of cereal boxes, foil wrappers and scrap paper. No new materials, just a rummage through the recycling and a pin.

⚠️ Quick but important bit: a pinhole projector is for standing with your back to the Sun, letting the image project onto the inside of the box. Never look through it at the Sun, and never look at the Sun directly without certified eclipse glasses. Eyes are not recyclable.
