Come to Rye Castle Museum and create some fabulous gel plate prints using the museum’s wonderful pottery collection as your inspiration. This workshop is a carbon copy of the workshop in August - it was so much fun we decided to do it all over again! Participants created some truly fabulous prints, and we can't wait to see what the next set of attendees produce.

Museum staff will be treating us to a behind-the-scenes tour where we can get close to the collection and really get inspired! You’ll then create up to four stencils to use on the gel plate during the printing part of this workshop. It’ll be up to you to decide on whether to stick to traditional colours and outlines or go a bit wild in your interpretation - there will be no rules (and no limit on the amount of prints produced in the time given)!

What a wonderful morning Rye Castle Museum learning about, and getting inspired, by their beautiful pottery collection. We were treated to special, behind-the-scenes access where Penny & Heather from the museum shared their knowledge and gave us the opportunity to get close to many of the stunning pottery pieces. We then created stencils using many of the shapes and designs as inspiration. Then it was outside to the courtyard to get printing using the hand-cut stencils on the gel plates. Participants really did create some magical prints using a range of techniques, colours and mark-making tools – be sure to look through all the photos to get an idea of the whole session.

Plans are already bubbling away for another session, so if this update whets your appetite, then keep a look out for the next one soon!

Hello! August’s focus for the Ways of Doing challenge is all things FRUIT! There’s a stack of it about at the moment - the strawberries are ripe for the picking, the apples are maturing and the pears will soon be turned into chutney… Your challenge is to creatively respond to the fruity theme – anything goes - photography, embroidery, painting, a piece of music, sketching, collage, baking, printing, poetry, prose…go with whatever way you fancy!

This challenge is completely free to take part in; it's just something joyful and creative to get involved with. Once you’ve created your response, share it on Instagram with the hashtag and tag .art or email it to me at [email protected] with all the details.

Now, there’s also another reason why I have chosen fruit as the theme this month. Ways of Seeing is sponsoring a collage category in the fabulous Rye Flower and Veg Show again this year. The show takes place on Saturday 22nd August at the Rye Community Centre and if you’re local to Rye in East Sussex all you have to do is create a collage with a fruit theme and bring it to the show for judging (I won’t be the judge, phew!). There's much fun to be had with this one and if you are the lucky winner, you'll win a Ways of Seeing collage workshop of your choice! The competition is open to adults & children. Head over to the 'classes' section of their website for all the information: https://ryeflowerandvegshow.co.uk/classes-and-prizes-2026/

Have a great month everyone, I can’t wait to see what you are inspired to create!

This is one of my favourite workshops…the focus is on the ‘cut-out’ technique of Henri Matisse which he developed during the last years of his artistic life. You'll discover how Matisse ‘carved into colour’ - using simple shapes and vivid tones to transform paint and paper into a vibrant world of plants, animals, figures, and shapes.

After an introduction to Matisse’s work we’ll be creating a series of Matisse-inspired cards, a bookmark and an A4 collage artwork over the course of the morning. Book yourself in for a whole load of colour and joy!

I was invited back to deliver another creative morning for ‘The Monday Gang’ this week. We brought colour and creativity to a heap of pebbles this morning – check out the brilliant mixture of abstract and figurative designs produced!

The Monday Gang is a vibrant & easy-going group for people in the early stages of dementia. They meet on a Monday in the gorgeous walled garden of Hands Of Hope Charity UK in Hawkhurst. Big thanks to Sarah & Fiona at WRAP (Weald Rural Activities Partnership) & The Dementia Experience for inviting me to deliver this creative workshop and thank you to everyone for another warm welcome!

Do you have a group you’d like to book a bespoke workshop for? I can provide creative sessions for both adults and children. All materials for the workshop are provided (along with a stack of guidance and encouragement from me!). Send me an email: [email protected] with more details. Shelley ✂️

The focus for July's Ways of Doing challenge is…THE SEA! An inspiration to so many artists throughout the centuries and there’s a lot of scope for different ways to respond to this theme. Photography, embroidery, painting, a piece of music, sketching, collage, printing, poetry, prose…go with whatever way you fancy! I think I might try printing with seaweed!

This challenge is completely free to take part in; it's just something joyful and creative to get involved with. Once you’ve created your response, share it on Instagram with the hashtag and tag .art or email it to me at [email protected] with all the details. I can’t wait to see what you are inspired to create!
