Set in 90’s L.A Stainless by Todd Grimson follows the relationship between archetypical vampire Justine and her human helper, former musician and ex-addict Keith. The narrative around their transition from toxic co-dependence to devoted lovers forms the main thrust of the first part of the novel. As the novel progresses, we meet David, a vampire created and neglected by Justine many years ago, out for revenge. Here we have a truly sadistic creature who brings horror in abundance.

With stylistic comparisons to Brett Easton Ellis and James Ellroy, Todd Grimson has been described as ‘the best horror writer you’ve never heard of’. Hopefully, this re-publication will bring his work to a new audience.

It also comes with a great introduction by Alex Carabine, to be read after the novel as it contains spoilers, for anyone seeking a deeper exploration of the novel, writing style and genre.

Stainless is part of Dead Ink’s Outsider Classics series which seeks to exhume lost literary voices that were ahead of their time, curated specifically for readers who want to stray into the margins and away from the mainstream. We look forward to discovering more from the series.

This Korean cult classic is sad and beautiful and one we’d definitely recommend. Hunger by Choi Jin-Young is a love story that captures the unbearable grief of losing a lover.

We learn from the outset that Dam, the female protagonist intends to eat the body of her murdered lover Gu. But this is not a horror story, and the central premise of cannibalism is not there to shock, it is an unthinkable act of devotion. Told in two voices, tracing the couple’s tragic relationship to its final act of togetherness, this intimate novella is a must read.

In Woman Alive by Susan Ertz a sole female survives in a world of men. And what a woman she is. Stella Morrow is the plain speaking, pragmatic and passionately pacifist protagonist of this curious science fiction novel first published in the 1930s. She is the matriarch who holds the fate of humanity in her hands.

On one level this is a charming piece of speculative fiction but what lies underneath is a strongly feminist anti-war, political satire. This is a novel for our times, and Stella Morrow speaks words we need to hear and heed.

We are delighted to have the new edition of The Eighth Life (for Brilka) by the masterful Georgian author Nino Haratischwili. This multigenerational epic begins with the Russian Revolution and spans a century. It is a story of war, love, loss and hot chocolate ☕️. At over 900 pages it is a mighty tome but will keep you hooked until the last.

Highly recommended for fans for historical fiction, big books and great storytelling. If you love the writing of Elena Ferrante, Rohinton Mistry or Abraham Verghese this could be the book for you.

Wishing everyone a very Happy Easter. Thanks for all your support. We’ll be open again, as usual, at 10am on Tuesday.
