Spend a September evening with actor, gardener and author Caroline Quentin as she joins us in conversation about her new book, Drawn to Nature. It’s a beautiful meditation on the joys of the natural world, delightfully illustrated by Caroline herself, and full of stories from her life and memories of places and people that have enriched her love of nature.

We’re really thrilled that Caroline is coming to Shaftesbury - what a treat! If you regularly attend our author events please be aware that this one is not in our usual venue. Instead we’ll be in St Peter’s Church just a few paces down the High Street from FOLDE HQ. Very few tickets remain, but if you’re quick you might just be able to grab one. When you think of Italy, what springs to mind? Antiquities, classical literature, philosophy and modern-day culture? Food and fashion, perhaps? What has gone largely overlooked – and undocumented, even by its people – is its unique biodiversity.

Italy has the widest variety of wildlife in Europe with over 60,000 different species, and around 4,800 of these are found nowhere else on Earth. It has more grape varieties than France, more wheat than the United States, over 300 local tomatoes, and dozens of citrus and chestnut varieties. Edward Cutler, co-founder of the Tuscany Environment Foundation, began to explore Italy’s history on his Tuscan farm.

Starting with a small salamander endemic to the surrounding Apennine Mountains, he opened a trove of discoveries. Alongside a dedicated community of Italian biologists and conservation scientists, he has traced a journey of the country’s geological past to its present-day landscape and beauty, architectural heritage and gastronomic wonders.

Edward will be here next Wednesday in conversation with Muna Reyal to tell us more about this eye-opening guide, which makes a compelling case for prioritising Italian conservation and ecosystem services while highlighting the country’s profound ecological impact on Europe as a whole.

Our autumn events programme is officially underway, and we’re especially looking forward to next Wednesday’s evening with Roger Morgan-grenville, a firm favourite with Shaftesbury audiences following his visit in 2025.

He’s back to celebrate the paperback launch of The Restless Coast, a beautifully written journey around Britain’s 10,000 miles of coastline. Part travelogue, part love letter to the natural world, the book explores the people, wildlife and wild places that make our shores so extraordinary, and asks what we must do to protect them for the future.

Hey you, Raising Hare fan. Yes, you!

If, like us, you’ve run out of people to give a copy of this book to, you might want to take note of something very special that’s happening next week.

And just like that, the summer holidays are drawing to a close. (We don’t know about you, but we were convinced there was still another week of August to go...)

The good news is, September is the start of our autumn events programme, and what a line-up we have for you. From poetry about the Blackmore Vale to an apothecary garden on Orkney, via journeys around Britain’s coastline and in search of its lost goddesses, to an exploration of how Italy’s nature has shaped its culture and civilisation, plus a very special invitation to reconnect with nature from a renowned figure in British comedy, this season is going to be an absolute treat, dear FOLDE friends. And that’s just the start of it as October and November are looking pretty tasty too!
