We took a much longer break from social media over Christmas than was originally intended…partly because we were all struck down with a cold, but mainly because I didn’t realise quite how much I needed a proper block if time off until it was happening. 2025 was a year that completely transformed our business and oh my goodness are we grateful but it was also A LOT of work. I feel refreshed, so much more creative and finally truly excited to go in to the new year now, I can’t believe what a different two weeks away from the business made.

We hope you all had a peaceful time, thank you for bearing with us, we are so grateful you are all here following along. ❤️

PS. I’m currently reading Bring No Clothes: Bloomsbury and the Philosophy of Fashion by and LOVING it. I’ve read so much about Woolf and Bloomsbury from my project last year and yet this feels so fresh! I also love how it tackles why fashion is a crucial piece of history that needs to be treated seriously whilst simultaneously keeping the text witty, light hearted and gripping. I am so enjoying it. I know it’s only January, but I seriously suspect this is going to be one of my favourite books of the year!

Three things we live by when making the many, many decisions one has to make when running a shop…

SHOW OUR WORKINGS
Our shop is full of mood boards, sketchbooks and our vintage sewing machines because we think, to feel connected and excited by a piece of clothing, you need to be able to see the process and thoughts behind it. This is a no brainer for us as make the majority of stock in house. On a separate but related note to passersby, please stop asking to put your jumble sale posters up on our vintage textiles moodboard, I can’t promise our staff’s reaction will be polite 😂 (we will probably put them up in our window instead)😘

WE ONLY SELL THINGS WE WOULD BE EXCITED TO SEE
We are really careful not to get anything in purely because we think it’ll be a cheap and cheerful bestseller. Unless it’s something we love, it feels fresh and we think it’s a reasonable price point for what it is, we won’t stock it. It was actually really handy realising this as it made filtering down what we wanted to stock so much easier.

WE ONLY STOCK A FEW MAKERS FROM EACH DISCIPLINE
We make about 75% of what we sell in our studio above the shop however we do stock work from a select few other makers, mainly ceramics and jewellery. We are really careful that we don’t stock too many makers of the same discipline to ensure that anyone who sells with us has the best chance of success but also so it’s more interesting for customers. Do bear this in mind if you’ve applied to be a supplier for us unsuccessfully, it’s usually a matter of space etc rather than anything about your work ❤️

Thank you so much for your patience, we will be back to normal (with some extremely exciting new stock) by Friday 21st November and in the mean time, the wonderful and will be ready to welcome you at the hours above ❤️

Everyone always asks if we have drawn a line down the middle of the studio we share, thankfully that hasn’t been necessary yet!

Me and mum had separate studios in the same courtyard for a few years before we came together to create Marigold Moth, so we were used to working closely but it’s such a treat to get to collaborate more broadly day to day now that we share the business. Mum studied textile design for her degree so she is much better at the more creative, intuitive stages of the design process where as I studied costume design so I come in to my own with the more technical pattern drafting and garment construction. I think having different skill sets is so handy, not only for working together harmoniously, but also as we both bring varied skills to the pattern table meaning we end up with much more interesting final pieces.

I love looking at my mum’s inspirations hung around her sewing machine and painting desk, there are ornaments I remember from when I was a child and references that are so similar to the things that I am drawn to yet also such different colour ways too. I feel so lucky that we get to work together and spend so much time together travelling. Getting to travel for work was our ultimate dream when we set up Marigold Moth and we still feel giddy that it came true quite so quickly!

Working with family works brilliantly for us (although I fully appreciate it’s not for everyone and we are very lucky indeed that it goes quite so well) but I can’t imagine designing prints or collections on my own any more, two minds really are better than one!

5 things we do in our clothing studio to keep ourselves feeling creative…

MIXED MEDIA MOOD BOARDS
I try keep my mood boards vaguely cohesive in their different colour families and then be freer with the imagery and textiles. We add to the boards over time as we find vintage button cards, old magazine clippings and fabric samples at the car boot. These boards really are the back bone of our research when it comes to design clothing prints for each collection, and they help me keep my inspirations logically organised rather than floating about in my chaotic brain.

DIFFERENT ZONES FOR DIFFERENT JOBS
Keeping designated zones for sewing, painting, admin etc is a godsend for me so you don’t have to tidy down/get things out every time you need to start a job meaning no procrastinating or faffing. I also find it so jarring if once I’m settled down I don’t have the things around me that I need which is remedied by this set up too.

FOUND TREASURE ON DISPLAY
An extension of our mood boards, me and mum both have vintage clothing pieces hung around the studio. Whether it’s the shape, the garment construction or the embellishment, we find it is so handy to have interesting, beautiful things in your eye line when working.

PRINTED PHOTOS FROM RESEARCH TRIPS
I love printing photos out so that I actually see them daily. I am so much more likely to get inspiration from something if I catch sight of it organically rather than keeping it digitally on my phone where I have to deliberately seek it out.

COLLABORATING WITH OTHER CREATIVE
took these beautiful photographs in our studio. I find it so stimulating chatting, collaborating and working with other creatives, it’s so exciting seeing a project develop in ways you could have never anticipated if you had been working on it alone. Invite a creative to your studio for a cup of tea, I’ll bet your conversation will leave you feeling creatively excited!

It was an absolute pleasure to be featured in the current issue of .press magazine chatting about all things Marigold Moth, how lucky I am to work with my Mum and most excitingly of all a dreamy photoshoot collaboration with and which I am going to be sharing the images of over the next few weeks, also a massive thank you to who took the most beautifully peaceful shots of me and mum in the studio ❤️

There’s still a couple of copies available in the stationary section of our online shop so do grab one if you fancy a read through 😘

(Ps. I’m holding my mum’s dachshund in this photo, in case anyone was worried Winnie had shrunk)

A very restful Sunday…

1. An experimental make of a possible prop for an upcoming project 🦋I’ve wanted to have a go at something like this for ages so I determinedly ignored my admin and spent a very happy few hours listening to radio four and water colouring a vintage doily. Highly recommend this as a Sunday activity.

2. My beloved greyhound, Winifred Nicholson, snoozing after a very long and sunny walk 🌞

3. The coastal path view at about midday today, although it was very chilly indeed, warmer days finally feel with in touching distance 🩵

Dare we say that Spring has finally sprung? 💚🌸🌱

I’ve had a break from the studio for the last month to focus on some other work and to make sure I was fully rested and restored for the summer ahead…anyone who has witnessed St Ives in full season will understand the necessity of this, it’s not for the faint of heart!

It’s worked a treat and I am so excited to be back! The studio is open 10am - 5pm tomorrow and on Sunday the online shop will be fully stocked with the new summer collection.

Over the next few days I’m going to be sharing the inspiration and process behind this collection as well as some sneak peeks of the final pieces. I am so proud of this work and so glad I took a break and am now feeling rested, optimistic and creative for the summer ahead. Thank you for being patient with me…stay tuned over the next few days!

Love, Tea 🌸

(Blouse and waist coat pictured will be amongst the pieces available on Sunday, size small through to extra large) 🌸🌱

Thank you so much to everyone who came on Saturday, it has been the most successful collection yet and I’m feeling so very grateful. 🧡

It means even more to me than ever that people choose to support my small business during hard times. It’s more important than ever to shop local and invest in pieces that are made to last and be worn for many years to come. The wonderful local community here never fails to amaze in its willingness to do just that, I’m feeling very lucky indeed 🧡

The collection will be online at 6pm today, with many garments ready to ship alongside a collection of waistcoats and trousers that are made to measure.
