From scattered scraps of colour to something almost ready to take flight!

I’ve been building this butterfly piece bit by bit for the next Aurifil Artisan Monthly Challenge - starting with fabric pieces and slowly layering them into shape.

This is the final stage where it’s all fused and ready to be peeled away from the baking paper (always such a satisfying moment!)

It’s still one of my favourite parts of fabric collage - that transformation from loose pieces into something whole.

Slowly bringing this butterfly to life...

I’m working on one of my fabric collage appliqué patterns as part of the Aurifil Artisan Monthly Challenge - and this stage is always my favourite… when all the little fabric pieces start to find their place.

Progress so far, playing with colour, shape and tiny details. Not perfect, just evolving as I go, a good project to use up smaller bits of fabric ❤️

A Bank Holiday, a fresh project, and a table full of fabric!

I’m starting my April Aurifil Artisan piece today - this month’s theme is “Make With Me”, and I’ll be creating a peacock butterfly.

It’s one I’ve been really looking forward to.

Are you creating today or taking it easy?

The softer, calmer side...

In contrast to the deep, moody blues, this side leans into lighter, more neutral tones - bringing a sense of balance to the whole piece.

It was really about letting those softer colours breathe, while still building up detail with free-motion stitching using Aurifil 50wt to echo the textures across the moth.

Just like the other side, the elements were created in sections and then brought together with monofilament thread, allowing everything to sit cleanly without interrupting the design.

I love how the contrast between the two sides changes the feel of the piece depending on where you look.

Do you prefer the moody tones or the softer, neutral side?

A closer look at the details from my Aurifil Artisan takeover piece.

I loved working with these moody blue batiks for the background - they really make the warm tones of the moth stand out.

Once the Inktense drawing was complete and the metallic foil added, I dropped the feed dogs and switched to a free-motion spring foot, stitching over the surface with Aurifil 50wt to build up detail and movement.

The wings and body were created separately, then carefully pieced together using monofilament thread so everything blends seamlessly.

What detail draws you in first?

Lots of these lovely raw edge appliqué stitch kits heading out in the post lately!

It’s so lovely to see these cheerful yellow blooms popping up everywhere, they really brighten the day, especially when the sunlight catches them just right.

A little burst of spring, stitched and shared.

What’s your favourite sign of spring?

Working with batik always feels a bit special 💙
Sunshine through the window is a welcome bonus, more tomorrow please!

Beautiful batiks purchased from at the weekend.

Stitching experiments…

Trialling some pieced improv curves and testing the decorative stitches on my sewing machine using batik fabrics. I’m also seeing how different thread weights change the look of the stitch.

50wt (orange) – subtle
28wt (grey) – more defined
12wt (red) – bold and textured

Same stitch, completely different effect depending on the thread.

Just a bit of creative play for one of the projects I’ve got on the go alongside my usual work.

I've been slowing things down with some English Paper Piecing in the evenings, there’s something so grounding about hand piecing, especially when using up treasured scraps from past makes. Every fabric here has had a previous life in the studio, which makes this piece feel even more meaningful.

Hand stitched together with Aurifil 80wt (beautifully fine and strong) and machine quilted in 40wt cotton for soft texture and definition.

The design comes from February’s issue of resized into something smaller - soon to be a quilty cushion keeping me company in the studio.

Day 24 | micro/macro

I love how textiles can be appreciated on so many levels - from the bigger picture of a finished cushion or collage, right down to the tiny stitches, frayed edges, and textures you only notice up close.

From hand-stitched details to neat machine stitches, it’s often in those micro moments that the real magic hides - the little threads, colour shifts, and layered fabrics that make the whole piece come alive.
